For the orgo reactions, do we have to know the reaction intermediates, i.e., how A+B->C, or is it enough just to know the products and reactants?

Also, do we have to just be able to predict products, or do we have to memorize certain reactions (i.e. how hydrobromic acid replaces OH with BR)?
