Can anyone tell me what happens at orientation. I looked on GW's site and last years incoming class had 3-4 days of orientation. What are you doing for so many days?

I second this. I will be starting at MCW in August, and they have "orientation" scheduled from 8/9 until 8/13. Do I have to be there every day, all day?
This would be good info to know as I'm trying to figure out when to quit my job.

Yes, you have to be there. You will find out what will be happening the rest of the year. You will also probably have student ID's made, get a tour, get a TB skin test, Hep B vaccination, etc. It is hopelessly boring, but it's helpful. And don't forget, you get to meet your classmates!

A lot of drinking occurs during orientation week.... Have fun....

tons of drinking, its a great time! when i started our orientation was 2 weeks, which was insane, but it was a time when the class really had time to go out, have drinks and get to know each other. some of it is total bs and a waste of time, but what the hell, this med school will make you a doc, the least you can do is sit in orientation for a week.

We had some group activities to get to know our classmates -- picnics, parties, ropes course, etc. Plus we did some problem-based learning practice tutorials, got our vaccines, etc.

You'll have a load of fun! Ours was Mon-Fri 9-4 or so (except Friday, out by noon).

Enjoy, and congrats on starting med school!

Yep, we did this and also had some lab orientations and CPR class.

Thanks for replying guys. It sounds like its different depending on the school. I hope it's more get-to-know people stuff than boring administration stuff. 🙂

I'd advise you to quit your job a week or two early. Then take a vacation or relax as you set up your new place.

during the days orientation was completely boring with paperwork and administrative stuff that needed to be taken care of, but the rest of the time was a lot of fun, lots of drinking included.

Yes, the days were very boring. But in the evenings, the 2nd years had different planned activities for us to do, such as bars, but they tried to include one family night I think, too, at a pizza place. When I was a 2nd year, we helped out with the 1st year's orientation and did the same thing, but they were all bar oriented.

I don't think anyone should miss out.

Hey Folks,
There are two times that you can really enjoy being a medical student. One is during orientation week (drinking, partying and no classes) and the other is fourth year after you have your Step II scores and match letter in hand (drinking, partying and little to do except show up and graduate).

Enjoy orientation week where they tell you how wonderful you are to be at their wonderful school before the shoe kicks you in the rear end the next week. If you start first day of classes hung over, that kick won't hurt nearly as much and you find yourself saying BOHICA!
