Hey, my mentor is a fellow named Trip Fell, but I haven't contacted him yet. I received all of my orientation materials and invitations the other day. Fish or chicken? 😀 Looks like the committee has planned a few activities for our social enjoyment, so that's good news. Got any orientation advice?

I tend to steer away from fish I don't make myself. I got the chicken last year.. and it was way dry. ugh. I ended up going out after it was over for dinner. orientation advice.. hmmmm.. the first day they will bore you to tears with more speakers than you know what to do with. Get to know the people at your table, go to the social funcitons, and definitely go to the second day orientation thing. You'll get to have lunch with your mentor, get your white coat, and well, I'll be there you can come by and say hi! 😀 🙂

Trip is a very cool guy! He's super nice, went to TCU and was on their swim team. He's married.. I can't remember how old, but you'll definitely like him!! (I don't know many people that don't like him) 😉

Keep an eye out for me on Friday. I have two mentees so you'll probably see them with me. (Chad Toups and Erica Pun) I'm on the tall side (for a girl) and I have really short brown hair. Otherwise, just look for the loud girl. 😉 (that's what my friends always say anyway) I'm usually laughing.

Bottom line.. have fun! at orientation. The people I met at the social mixers before orientation were the people I hung out with all year. They became some of my best friends and study buddies. study buddies are always good to have!!

cpw, I have a question for you. In one of our packets this summer, it mentioned that we should try to look at our mentor's old tests before the first day of class. Then it said "hint, hint". What does that mean? Is there some type of quiz on the first day of class?

Hello Vasquez and Optometry,

I'm not going to have any Perkins loans, so I can't really help you out with information. I have all Stafford loans through various providers, and all of that has gone through, I'm just waiting for dispersment. I hope that all of our financial issues will be addressed in a timely manner, considering that Mr. Ybarra has moved on to bigger and better things. I went ahead and got all of the books on the sheet, even if a few of them will be nothing more than shelf decoration. I bought all of them online, some even used, at amazon.com and half.com for what I feel are good prices. I think I spent around $700 for the entire list. Vasquez, did you find a place for you and your family to live here in Houston? I remember you saying in an earlier post that you were looking. Well, I'm looking forward to meeting all you guys, I'll be in around this forum while finishing up my summer job if you want to discuss anything.

Okay, let me see if I can tackle all these questions.. but this is great that y'all are getting to know each other ahead of time.

Books: There are only THREE books on the list you will EVER open (let alone use). The only ones you need are... Visual Perception by Schwartz (I CANNOT STRESS ENOUGH HOW IMPORTANT THIS BOOK WAS TO PASSING VISION SCIENCE ONE!!!!!!) Especially since y'all have a new instructor this year and I found her hard to follow when I had her as a guest lecturer last year. Book two is.. The histology Atlas.. definitely need that one.. histo's rough. And the final one is the Anatomy Atlas (Grant's).. although it's not the best atlas out there.. there are MUCH better atlases. If you want to get a really good anatomy atlas I would recommend getting the Rohen/Yakochi (sp?) atlas.. it has actually cadaver photographs and is a better atlas than Grants (which has cartoony style drawings).. the only other atlas I would consider would be Netters. My choice for the anatomy we have to take is rohen's because it looks the most like the anatomy we're doing.
And that's all I have to say about books.

Old tests: yes, your mentor will have old tests for you. There is no pop quiz the first week. Just make sure you have the old tests before your first test week and you'll be fine. Some of us will have old Optics labs for you (they never change them.. so copy to your hearts content) .. optics lab is basically a big waste of time. [but that's just my biased opinion.. make your own] But, yes old tests are worth it!!! You will some of the questions from old tests again.. (that's what the HINT HINT meant). Nothing to freak about Optometry. 😉

I think that's most of the questions. I think most of my financial aide stuff is over and done with. we all filed in March as returning students and most of my paperwork (perkins and otherwise) went through a few months ago. Like Tommy, I am waiting to get my big fatty check.

Feel better guys. They still haven't sent my class our schedules yet to register. Which means I still have no parking sticker. (they register for y'all so you should get yours very very soon!) They're still dorking with our class schedule after all the "revised schedule" people and drop outs. [they do happen]
