3-4 students out of what...260?
Ortho is not DO friendly and is only going to get worse. Also you have more people willing to apply to ortho from DO schools.
From my school we have around 8-10/250 apply ortho per year and only 1-2 apply ENT (if that).
Not all class sizes are, but we matched 3 into ortho this year and there are around 250 in the class.

There are a good amount of AOA ortho programs around compared to other surgical specialties so that offers some yield protection and that's why you see ortho matches every year (as supposed to ICT or IPS or NSX matches which is quite rare).

There are a disproportionate amount of AOA ortho spots compared to other AOA subspecialties. Don't let that fool you, ortho is about as competitive as it gets for DOs, especially with the merger.
Ortho DO is just as competitive as ortho MD. Most established DO schools have a handful that match ortho, which is quite similar to MD school ortho matches.
Quick google search gave me this for 2017
Northwestern - 5
Brown - 2
UPenn - 8
Yale - 1
Columbia - 5
Boston U - 6
UMichigan - 6
TCOM - 5
KCU - 3
CCOM - 7
AZCOM - 3
WesternU - 3
LECOM - 8
The point is, ortho is extremely competitive for both MD and DO, but still attainable for DO. And as mentioned above, many DO schools don't have optho, derm, or plastics residency programs. This is one reason why you don't see many DOs matching in these fields.

Remember that LECOM includes all campuses, so that 8 ortho matches out of around 800. Don't underestimate how competitive the best DO students date, because that is who you are competing with for ortho spots. With the merger you now have to compete with MDs as well.

You won't be getting compared to only DOs anymore. You will also have to compete with MDs as the merger will be in full effect by the time you graduate. There won't be any protected DO only spots anymore.
Do not kid yourself into thinking that the competitiveness of this (or any) field is about the same as a DO or an MD.
