Which of the less selective schools have unusually good matches in ortho?
NYMC is such an example for radiology. But it sucks for ortho. Are there any comparable schools that match well into ortho? Thanks.

what less selective schools are you considering? try to find their match lists and see if they have lots of students matching into ortho...of course this still isnt a good indication since it reflects student interest and not a school's reputation for sending grads into good ortho residencies. You can do ortho and get a great residency no matter which school you come from (yes even NYMC) if u do great on the boards and in your roations. Just work hard and dont expect your schools name to always carry you there. Good luck.

Pittsburgh and Georgetown are two. Pittsburgh's ortho research programis realy top-notch.

NJMS always has surprising number of graduates entering ortho. take a look at their match list the last couple of years. i'm not sure why ortho is so popular with students there.

I'm a fourth year med student going into ortho. You can get into 90% of ortho programs from any medical school, just do well in school and on the boards and do away rotations at the programs you are interested in. There are a few very academically oriented ortho programs out there that won't accept anyone outside of highly ranked medical schools, but they are the exception, not the norm. Basically your shot of matching into an ortho program will be more dependant on your performance in medical school than the school.

yep...11 last year 🙂

Georgetown has a ridiculous number of graduates that go into ortho. I think it was somewhere between 15-20 for the past couple of years. At least, that's what they told us at the interview. I believe it.

Don't worry too much about each school's total number of ortho matches per year. Georgetown's relatively high number has nothing to do with the caliber of the school; rather, the ortho department is very gung-ho about "recruiting" med students into the field, so they generate a lot of interest among the students (the chairman is very hands-on with the students during their rotations, and encourages them to pursue ortho). You will be able to match ortho regardless of you school as long as you do well, etc.

There are such "pipelines" at many schools (in different fields). Wake, for instance, has a very active anesthesia department and, as a result, a disproportionate number of the students go into gas (something like 19 out of 108 last year).

Upstate Medical has a really good match for ortho. Approximately 15 people matched last year.

Rush is a big ortho school. I'm not sure how they do in matching to ortho, but their ortho department is fantastic, and I can only imagine the training follows that trend.
