If you ever get confused on the test, you can usually tell by drawing out the resonance structures. Just a helpful hint if you get stuck on test day.
 
N(CH3)2 is an o/p director because it still has 2 loan pairs and therefore csan donate electrons. Anything that is electron donating is an o/p director. However, N(CH3)3 would be a meta director because if this is attached to the benzene ring it would have a plus charge and that would make is an electron withdrawing group.
