Happy Veteran's day!

The attached spreadsheet is designed to help veterans decide which Ortho programs will be the most economically attractive when using the Post 9/11 GI Bill, yellow ribbon program, and Reserve bonuses. It's a different ball game when you have access to the Post 9/11 GI Bill. This spreadsheet assumes you will take advantage of joining the reserves during your residency if you get into a 2 year program. I'm not sure about the Army or AF, but in the Navy you will be granted a waiver from activation for 2 years if you transfer directly from active duty to the reserves. This seems like a deal that no one should miss considering there is a $25K bonus for each year you're in assuming you sign a 3 year contract. Since you're on the hook for that third year, only 2 year programs have Reserve pay incorporated. I wouldn't recommend risking activation during a residency greater than 2 years.

The programs are ranked according to the total debt burden of each program after the GI Bill, Yellow Ribbon Program, any Reserve pay, and most importantly income earned during a third year for programs that are less than 3 years long.

Some state schools do not publish their in-state and out-of-state tuition which is very important. I've given the best info I have. You must independently verify this data as it changes quickly and can dramatically alter the results.

The second to last column tallies up just how much the post 9/11 GI bill and yellow ribbon program is worth depending on which school you go to. Hope this helps.

Thank you so much for your post! It was incredibly helpful. Additionally, congrats on matching for Ortho! Now I may research the possibly of Air Force Reserves... Thanks for sharing and good luck!

Army Reserves and Army National Guard still have $75K bonuses. Too bad there won't be enough time for me to go to the Basic Officer Leadership Course before my program starts. According to the AF and Air National Guard recruiters, they offer no bonus at all. For me, it's going to be Navy or nothing.
