ortho residency?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
top 10% of the class, 93+ on the boards....pretty much the most competitive specialty out there (more competitive than OMS)

You have to be the best in your class, HIGHEST GPA and HIGHEST Board Scores, If you are a "Good" standardize test taker then you will be fine!
Also make sure you pick a dental school that has alot of good research and a good reputation. eg. columbia, upenn, harvard, unc, etc are good schools to pick if you want to specialize. 🙂

Hmm... It's coming from a girl who doesn't even know what schools to apply and is already thinking about orthodontics.

Just stating some facts that everyone wanting to do Ortho needs to know, never said I was going to do Ortho myself... but properly could if I wanted to since I am related to TWO Orthodontist! 😛

Oral & maxillofacial radiology is almost exclusively an academic specialty. It's much, *much* easier to gain admission to than orthodontics. The pay is significantly less, but the hours are generally pretty friendly.

Like Aphistis said, "It's much, *much* easier" to get into--and that might even be an understatement. There are only a handful of radiology programs around, and I'm sure they have many openings each year.

OMF Radiology should *not* be confused with the radiology of our medical counterparts in terms of lifestyle and income.

You can probably work less hours being a general dentist and make more money than being an oral radiologist. Like Bill said, you'll probably be teaching at a school.

How about dental anesthesia?

whoops i didn't mean dental radiology or whatever i meant the radiology after u get ur MD...to become radiologist... to be honest i want to get that job because i really want to work less hours(i really want to have a good life)...BUT i still am becoming a doctor(hopefully) to help people and not for the money and i would definitely work extremely hard to get there but i don't want to become a workaholic and i want my hard work to pay off with spending time with my family...

From what I know, radiology is very competitive to get into. But they do have one of the best lifestyles as an MD/DO. The radiologist my dad works with works 9-5 M-F and takes home 600k. The guy sits in a room by himself, looks at pictures and signs off on them.

If you want to be a radiologist, go to med school. If you want to be a dentist, go to dental school.
