I thought I would start this as an ortho thread for those interested in ortho. How can we make ourselves really competitive for ortho besides the usual (grades, step1...)? Does research, publishing, service, extra curriculars help? Share what you are doing and what you have heard helps.

yes

i talked to the PD at doctors and they said the first screen is boards. if you dont have about a 600 your app is thrown to the bottom of the pile. if you didnt rotate there, your app is thrown to the bottom of the pile. they also said you need research and a high class rank. the way i see it is, you have to be the real deal in every way: boards, grades, research, class rank, personality...... if there is any problem/deficiency you wont get in.
