So I was talking to my podiatrist and I mentioned that I am interested in podiatry. He then recommended me to go into orthopedics because podiatry becomes boring; there are only so many feet problems (according to him). I'd think that there are only so many musculoskeletal problems for orthopedic surgeon to treat. But then he chose podiatry because of the flexible hours.

Has anyone else been interested in both ortho and pod and how did you choose? Also are the hours really that different? I thought they work about the same hours (9-5) or is it that podiatrists typically see less patients, so they typically work for less hours?

I believe this opinion to be short-sided. In any profession, their is monotony. Yes, their are things you will see over and over in podiatry but this is no different than any other medical specialty. I did three straight months of orthopedic trauma. Believe me, by the end of it, their was plenty of monotony. Whether you do accounting, physical chemistry, law enforcement, podiatry, etc, you're going to have monotony.

On the other hand podiatry can be very diverse. Sure, there are certain things you are going to see everyday. But, between the clinic, ED, OR, and hospital, you can see a lot of different and interesting things as well. In the past month, I've seen malignant melanoma, osteosarcoma, multiple gunshot wounds, open fractures, and even a gentlemen who got his foot caught in an excavator bucket. And sure, I've done plenty of bunions and hammertoes as well!

JUST IN THE FEET?!~?!?!

*quote* "hey you, im gonna shoot you in the foot a bunch of times *quote* bang bang bang bang !!!

there was an episode on one of those trauma er shows on discovery health and one guy was shot in the lower leg with a shotgun at close range for not paying back money he owed to a gang. the result was a amputation to the knee bc the shotgun just blew right thru all the flesh and he faced the high risk of an infection developing
