I realize that this may be redundant and apologize in advance for it!! But I've been trying to figure out whether I should apply to ortho programs next year or not.. the biggest thing holding me back is the fact that I don't know if I will get in! .. Honest opinions are appreciated!

My stats -
School - UMDNJ
NBDE Part I - 91
Other stuff - 1 year of research, class officer, several clubs

Do I have a decent chance of getting in?

what is your class rank? that's the most important I think. You want to be in the top 10%. That being said, I'd go for it, what have you got to lose? Apply to as many programs as you can. seriously.

Although your GPA is pretty set, remember you still have control over your GRE score, your letters of recommendation, etc, so do a good job on them, because remember there are tons of crazy people that will try their hardest to get into ortho, the competition is stiff...

Another thing to consider is, will I be able to find a job? It's mighty slim pickings out there for ortho jobs right now and it will only get worse. So apply because you love it, not for any other reasons.

I agree 100%. Your stats that you posted seem fine, just make the rest of your application the best it can be (LoR, GRE, Personal Statement), and I definitely recommend applying to as many schools as you can afford. You never know what school will like you and invite you for an interview.

Based on your standings, it's likely that you will be able to get in, though not that easily. I think it would be good if you get additional credits before entering just to be sure.

How important is the GRE for ortho applications, honestly? Can an average GRE score really do that much damage to a good class rank and board score?

not important. just don't bomb it. at most schools it's just a formality since you are required to take the GRE to enter a MS program. there is maybe one or two schools who actually give it some weight. i think one of them was either UCSF or Univ of Washington if i recall.....?
