Hi,
I am incoming D1 student and I am currently interested in orthodontics (but it might change since I did not even started my D school yet).
I have shadowed and talked with lots of orthodontists but I have certain question about getting in to the program itself.

I heard that ortho is very competitive specialty and it often requires additional qualities such as research.
Do you guys know what kind of research will be helpful for the application in future?
My interest is in basic sciences but my DSchool don't have ortho specific reserches going on now..

Any advice is welcomed!

It sounds like you already know what to do. If your school does not currently have any orthodontic specific research, either choose the research project that most closely relates to ortho, or choose the one that interests you the most. I would recommend the latter. If the research interests you, you will be more involved and passionate, which could turn into a good letter of recommendation for when you do apply to programs. I don't think it's so much the subject of the research, but more the fact that you did it and you really applied yourself. Good luck in the future

I know of a friend who completed his orthodontics in LLU with no research background needed. Call the schools and find out what's required.

Areas similar to ortho research usually include modifying bone. Areas like bone growth would be a good start. The PI could also be an MD or PhD in a different research division, not necessarily a DMD/DDS in the ortho division.

If you want to have a shot at ortho, do research, don't put yourself in the position of not having done any research come application time and everyone around you has some sort of research they have been doing. Ortho is super competitive, you want to do everything in your power to be competitive. Yes, people get into ortho residencies without any research but why risk it? Research isn't all that bad and its always a nice break from the monotony of dental school didactics.

Do you guys find time doing research with all the classes??

Research is usually reserved for the summer, but some students do conduct research during the academic year.

Yes you can find time , I have a heavy course load but I still can find time to do research all year long. It also depends on the expectations of your lab.
