I am a MS-II trying to plan my rotations and I was to direct my electives towards orthopedic surgery. Can anyone give me an idea of what electives are essential in preparance for an ortho residency. I plan to do radiology, neuro, and trauma surgery thus far. Is there anything else?

Besides doing a couple of ortho electives or sub-i's during your fourth year (at hospitals that you would like to do your residency at), you can do plastics, surgical intensive care, trauma, and radiology. Doing infectious diseases, medicine and cardiology electives can be done to teach you basic skills that all surgeons should know too.

your intern year in ortho will have rads, trauma, and the unit experience. i took my fouth year to do my subs in ortho and then took cards, id, and nephrology as my biggies. you will never have the chance to think about these things in depth once residency starts. i went into each rotation with at least one solid goal. for example, during cards, i told them that i wanted to learn to read ekgs. during id, i gave my student presentations in ortho related id topics (ie. prosthetic infection). nephrology i just took for the medicine experience. you will have plenty of time to learn how to do everything related to managing a surgical patient. also, it makes taking step II and step III a breeze if you spend some time thinking about these things. and then you will have the rest of your life to be a dumb orthopod and slam bones!!!! good luck.
