Ok. Orthopedics and musculoskeletal disease is officially kicking my butt, at least mentally (we haven't been tested on anything yet, but I feel very behind). Honestly, there are the times I wish I has seen more clinical experience, as much as I dislike it, because everyone seemd to know more than me. I barely know what hip dysplasia is.

Does anyone know of any good teaching resources? All the five zillion types of bone lesions, ligament disruptions, all tiny little specific places on very specific bones....drive me crazy. I'm not really too great at radiology either (egh, which doesn't help considering all we are doing is looking at uber-subtle differences in bone density)👎 Somehow that tiny bit of fuzziness indicates some terrible joint disease? Are you kidding me? Bleh.

WhtstheFrequency, I hear you...sorry, I don't have a good reference for you (haven't taken it yet) but I did have an interesting fact for you if you hadn't heard it yet. That subtle change in bone density on a radiograph is pretty amazing, actually--it takes 60% of bone loss before it shows up on rads. Eeek! That's freaking amazing to me. Kind of like kidney function and renal values. Scary!

I know, I heard that statistic too, it's mind boggling. I mean, something you can barely, BARELY see meaning the integrity of the bone is more than half gone

Oh yeah, I love renal profiles. "Hmm...ok, ok, ok, woops, sudden tiny difference! That means 75%of your glomeruli have gone to crap! Sorry, time to buy small bags of dog food."

Musculo is a trip huh? I know how you feel. I have almost NO clinical experience in small animal. We have our state veterinary conference this weekend, and a publisher was there peddling books. I bought what is supposed to be "THE BOOK" of small animal orthopedics. If it hasn't been recommended to you already, try Brinker and Flo's Handbook of Small Animal Orthopedics and Fracture Repair. It is VERY highly recommended by my professors. If I come across any more resources in class, I'll forward them your way. BTW, nice to see another path nerd around 😀 I was hugging my new copy of Pathologic Basis of Veterinary Disease today!
