Osmotic vs oncotic pressure

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Oncotic pressure is a form of osmotic pressure. That is, it is the component of osmotic pressure due specifically to proteins.

Osmotic pressure is caused by water being in different concentrations across a semipermiable membrane. Oncotic pressure is the portion of that pressure caused only by proteins (mostly albumin if we're talking about blood).

For example, albumin causes an increase in oncotic pressure, resulting in water movement from ISF -> ECF, and a resultant increase in osmotic pressure.
