How many of your rotations were out of pocket? For instance, I work in an allo residency program and they have recently implemented a pay per week system for DO's and IMG's.
I don't think this is a new thing but I was curious as to how your school handles this, if at all, or is it on you if you choose to do audition rotations at an institution with this policy.

Thanks in advance!

which institution pulled that garbage? Pretty sure my school already allocates funds for elective spots.

So no matter where you choose your elective they cover the cost? If so exceptional!

I could easily be wrong, but I remember during interview at AZCOM they said something along the lines of "if you arrange rotations through some other location, we can arrange/set up things with them pretty easily"

I took it to mean, whatever money would have gone to regular AZCOM rotations, would be diverted to compensate the 3rd party location for their troubles. Who knows what is true or not though, I'd have to ask a 4th year.

When and if you find out please post or PM me. I would greatly appreciate it.

We were completely on our own for electives. Had to cover our own fees, tuition, housing, etc.

When you say on your own. Is this calculated into the loans you can take out, or are you literally on your own.

this almost certainly does not mean that they would cover fees. they likely mean that they'll work on getting an agreement with the institution and probably extending your malpractice insurance.

that being said, looking through VSAS it seems that most institutions treat DOs like MDs when it comes to fees. https://www.aamc.org/students/medstudents/vsas/119290/article_for_host_institutions.html (click on the institution name)

I dont know. I remember doing many rotations in multiple states during 4th year, mostly with allopathic residency programs. NYCOM paid for everything but housing and application fees. I never had to pay for any rotation.

May I ask how many rotations you did and the approximate cost you incurred?

I did 2 aways. 600 for rent at one place plus travel to get there so roughly 1,000. Other rotation I stayed at a relatives so just had travel cost of roughly 500. So id say 1500 total for away rotations. This number pales in comparison to interview season however.

Thank you for the reality check.

Yeah I would have to say your school probably meant that they would help with the paper work in order to set up the rotation. As for fees I'm almost positive those will be the students responsibility. It blows.

I have heard of a few programs that do this, UF gainesville being one of them ($800 per week). There is absolutely no way I am paying them money for a rotation when my MD counterparts arent required to do the same thing. there are more then enough programs that charge you nothing. just rotate at those places.

I'm curious did you actually rotate at a place that cost you fees? I've always been under the impression if they are charging DO students you're better off not doing the rotation.

Naww no fees at the places I went thankfully. I figure if they charge DOs fees and not MDs they are bloody unlikely to take us for residency anyhow as their is obviously discrimination going on.

UF Gainesville seems pretty DO friendly,so i don't know.

UF Jacksonville is also very DO friendly. They have a 4 DO's a year in their EM residency. I was told that the reason for the 800 fee was that DO schools tuitions are extraordinarily high and therefore the institution should be compensating the host institution for training / hosting the student. I'm not sure why that wouldn't apply to private MD schools though.

Edit:
Any LCME accredited school will not have to pay this fee, MD schools. The 800 figure was derived from the avg weekly cost of medical school education.

Dont kill the messenger here just forwarding info as get it. Still seems odd to me but it is what it is.

I'm paying for all my rotations out of my loans, but I have yet to apply for a place which cost more than $100 to rotate there. 800/week is outrageous.
