What kind of residency opportunities exist for D.O.'s who "barely" pass the COMLEX? I'm inquiry primarily about DO residency/internship positions. Thanks.

You should still be able to match into A DO EM residency... there are some that are better than others, but I would hazard a guess that you would be able to match into one of the smaller EM programs (as long as you do well in your EM elective months and get some LORs).

I know a DO who didn't do well on her COMLEX and she matched after her DO internship into a program.

Q, DO

Thanks! EM is one of my "favorite" fields going into medical school. Are there any other fields that would be a possibility? I understand FP is wide open. How about IM, Surgery, Rads, ENT, etc.?

Thanks for your post. I appreciate your feedback very much.

How about Fellowships as well? I'm particularly interested in Nephrology. Grandview Hospital in Dayton has a DO program in Nephrology, but I have no idea how competitive the field is. What would a DO have to do in order to pursue a fellowship in IM? This question is open to MD and DO programs/fellowships. Thanks!

Though this may sound unqualified coming from a rising second year, I believe that your choices will be limited to most primary care field (maybe with the exception of OB).

Not all osteopathic residencies are easy to get into, and not every DO who scores well on their boards enters an allopathic program. I can tell you for certain that Rad, ENT, Ophtlmo, are extremely competitive period.

Here is an idea, have you taken the USMLE. I know of several friends who scored better on this exam. The USMLE is a well writen exam compared to the COMLEX. Very few ambiguous questions. Again, this is what I heard. I don't take either exam until next June.

Good luck! Take care.

I have not taken either test. I will be starting school in the fall. I'm just trying to gauge the competitiveness of osteopathic residencies. Thanks for your reply.
