  1. Resident [Any Field]
I would like to introduce the North Shore Neurological Surgery Program to those canidates now going through the interview process. It has recently come to my knowledge that this program does not have a direct ERAS link, and that the information regarding program stats have been difficult to find.
This past year the program has officially moved to North Shore Hospital from LIJ as the home institution. Residents do still rotate through LIJ multiple times during their residency to gain complete pediatric experience, but with the vast majority of the adult cases being done at North Shore the move has been a boon for the residency. Nassau County Hospital is also associated with the residency and acts to give more trauma experience.
The total number of cases per year at NSUH are near 2,300 and the service has a typical range of 45-65 patients, relative to the season.
There are currently 3 dedicated neuro rooms however, there are typically 4-5 going at any given day with over 20 neurosurgeons having privileges at the hospital. There are eleven neurosurgeons currently who are solely contracted to the Health system with further expansion ongoing. The myriad of cases at North Shore currently run the gamut of Neurosurgery, with the one exception of peripheral nerve. North Shore is quite unique in that the cranial cases are near or more that of spine cases.
The program director, Dr. Mogilner, practices functional with approx 1-2 DBS procedure's per week with a plethora of peripheral nerve and spinal cord stimulators also taking place. The Vascular service is phenomenal with approx 1-2 open clippings per week coupled with an extremely busy endovascular service that serves a complete array of vascular pathology. Oncology is replete and multiple craniotomies for tumor excision in a single day are customary. There is currently one fellowship trained spine surgeon with nearly all other surgeons doing some aspect of spine. Instrumentation is a regular occurrence and the hospital is currently purchasing three dimensional fluoroscopy. NSUH also has intra-op MRI and will be bringing on a stereotactic surgeon in the near future who specializes in its use. NSUH-LIJ has also recently hired a Cornell trained epileptic surgeon and the program is gaining momentum. There is also the World Chiari Center run by Dr. T. Milhorat that provide services to patients from an international base.
NSUH currently operates a 10 bed neuro ICU with the SICU and MICU acting as boarders. The near future will provide us with a 16 bed and, within 12-16 months a 26 bed neuro ICU.
The pediatric service is run primarily at LIJ with two dedicated surgeons. Census at LIJ usually runs around 20-30 pts and one resident at a time currently serves LIJ. Nassau county also uses one resident per rotation and compliments the trauma experience at both NSUH and LIJ.
The Feinstein Medical Research Center offers a singular research experience with a new tumor banking protocol that will collect all neurosurgical pathology done at NSUH and LIJ. This tissue with allow for cell lines culture and micro assay- one of the few places on the east coast to offer such opportunities.
Recent graduates have gone on to extremely competitive fellowships. The current chief is going to the Barrow for spine under Dr. Sontag. Recent grads have gone to Wash U- peds, Miami-spine, Texas Back-spine and Cornell-peds.
This residency IS IN STRICT COMPLIANCE WITH THE 80 HR WORK WEEK. After a 24 hr call the post call resident leaves the hospital until the next scheduled day. Salaries alow for comfortable living on long island the hospitals are about 20 min. from Manhattan.
We are currently taking applications and have an interview date of 15Dec. If you cannot make it on the 15 a later date may be possible. For details on applying call 516.562.3017. If you have any questions for me, reply to this post with your email and will get back to you as soon as I can. Thanks and good luck

I spoke with Dr. Mogilner today and stated that he would be happy to a accommodate later interview dates if prospects could not make it on 15Dec. For any questions please call 516.562.3017 or email me and I will get back to you as soon as I can.

Just want to give this a bump, it is getting to be that time of year again. Everything in the previous statement stands with some important updates. As of this week, I was told that we are officially on ERAS and will be taking applications through the online service. Also, we have gained another attending specializing in radiosurgery, tumor and intra op MRI; we will soon have another vascular attending on board. The new neuro ICU (18 beds) is up and running and plans still exist to expand to the 28 bed unit within a year. From a spine standpoint, this week we put in the first artificial disc in the northeast and are expanding the number of spine cases at LIJ. Overall, all aspects have continued to grow. If anyone has any questions, reply with contact info and I will be sure to get in touch.
