Hey Guys,

I know that a lot of D.O.'s go into pediatrics (its primary care). My question is: are there any Osteopathic Pediatric residencies. I've been looking at some D.O. schools and almost everyone that matched into Pediatrics did so through an Allopathic Residency.

Thanks Meatwad: I've got a follow-up question

I searched for "Pediatric Residences" and found 15. The confusing part is when I click on a program it says that a lot of spots remain unfilled. For example, if you click on the first one Columbia Hosp/Palms West Hospital - Pediatrics Residency it says that there are 9 spots but that none of the 9 spots are filled? Thanks for answering my questions.

That's probably because those are for next year. They probably took down this past year's info because everyone should have already started their residencies. Some schools said the earliest applications would be considered starting in August '07 so those still open spots should be for next summer/fall.

Just fyi also ... it's osteopathic physicians, not osteopaths. Osteopath is an extremely outdated term for something that totally different from what a DO actually is.

ohh thanks! makes a lot of sense now. so how competitive is pediatrics? what about Emergency Med? both dream jobs for me!

That's a good question. I would like to know also. I think EM might be moderately competitive, so moreso than pediatrics but not as much as the really competitive residencies.

That's the way I understand it.

EM is more competitive than Peds (though I think I'd personally rather do peds!), but both have successful match rates from almost all DO schools. A lot of people view EM as primary care (and peds obviously is), and both are very doable. I think EM is more sought after my allo students, but that shouldn't be any problem (especially if you are looking more into DO residencies). Look at both the osteo and allo residencies for both, but all in all; good fields with good acceptance rates for DOs !👍

Like the other poster said, I believe it's because spots haven't filled yet this year.

As far as Peds and EM, EM is way more competitive, especially if you want an allopathic reisdency. I don't about DO pediatrics, but in a allopathic residencies, you can probably match somewhere in the country as long as you pass Step 1. EM is getting increasingly more competitive (shift work + decent pay).

A new D.O. friend of mine went into a peds residency at Duke recently. I believe he scored somewhere around a 235 on his boards.

I really want to do a combined EM/Internal medicine residency. I also want to do the NHSC scholarship so I dont think they will allow me to do the combined residency, must do IM only 🙁
