Hey Guys,

I am a PGY-1 at Brookhaven Radiology in New York and we just finished putting together our website for the upcoming interview season. If you're interested in AOA/osteopathic radiology, stop by and check us out.

Good luck with the upcoming interviews!

Oh, osteopathic radiology... that's where you treat the whole x-ray right?

Ha. Actually, you might be surprised at how much patient care we are involved with. For example, we perform every image-guided biopsy, we do LPs, central lines, injections (pain management), fluoro studies, nuc med, vascular interventional, para/thoracenteses, and more. All of those include direct patient care. So while we don't follow patient the way a GP or some specialists might, we actually do spend a decent amount of time in direct patient care (and by that I mean non-sedated, mostly). Of course we're not treating somatic dysfunction with the exception of pain management modalities, but in terms of the osteopathic whole body approach to patient care as well as our emphasis on anatomical structures, I would say it's directly appropriate in regards to the philosophy and practice of radiology.

After trying to relate in the pre-osteo forum that not all DO's are primary care it was great to see this specialist contribution. Just Made my Day. (Having a real slow day at work)🙂

Figured I'd bump this thread and continue it as the radiology interview thread.

I have a comlex level 1 score of 617 /226 on usmle. have done research - 1 publication. I know that ACGME is out of question and applying only AOA. But have not been able to get audition rotations. The only contact I had are PD's of residency programs. I emailed some and almost none got back to me. How to do you schedule these rotations if nobody gets back to you ?
Also anyone know what kind of students match into these programs ? do you have to be from the osteopathic school associated with the program or anyone has a fair shot ?
Also is it easier to get into radiology as compared to ophthalmology given there are more spots and scores count in the radiology programs
can anyone please chime into that ???????

I know either way would be good because I like medicine but more importantly the life style of not having to work all nights at the hospital should be good too.

Would those of you with interviews be so kind to post your ballpark stats and whether or not you auditioned at those locations? I'm a 3rd year (Level 1 ~ 600) with interest in Radiology, just want to see how I stand up.

Thanks =)

First of all, you're still a good candidate for plenty of ACGME Rads programs, specifically community programs. You likely won't get many looks from the top academic programs, but community ACGME is still very attainable for you.

To schedule rotations, I looked up each program I was most interested in, and on their own hospital website they will typically have the contact person to schedule rotations. I simply emailed them in Jan/Feb to schedule rotations anywhere from July-Nov and I had no problems whatsoever. I believe I may have called a couple as well and scheduled the rotation right over the phone. Luckily, none of the programs at which I rotated utilized VSAS for scheduling.

From my current experience, I haven't noticed much of an impact of programs favoring students from their respective school. The biggest advantage these students would have at such programs is the ease of access to rotations and maybe spending some additional time with the programs "off the books". For DO programs, audition rotations are HUGE! I know at Grandview they won't even interview someone who hasn't rotated through unless "they are an ex-Navy Seal with a 700+ COMLEX" (that's a direct quote from a current Grandview resident that obviously isn't meant to be taken literally but just shows how important auditions are for them). Other programs may not have such strict preference for auditioning students (I've received 3 interviews so far from programs that I didn't rotate through and all the programs I have rotated through have offered interviews), but auditioning will never hurt your chances, unless of course you are an over zealous student who likes to correct residents.

As far as my stats, they aren't great. I was close to, but under 600 on both level 1 and 2, and didn't take USMLE. Top 40% of class, mostly High Sat and Honors for 3rd year. I have no research or other radiology experience. Biggest thing is to show interest during 3rd year, spend as much time getting to know radiology residents and attendings as possible (get a couple solid LORs), and do some audition rotations where you're interested. I've also received a few interviews at ACGME programs (I applied to 16 community programs), so definitely keep that in mind and apply broadly.

If you all have any other more specific questions, feel free to PM me and I'll try to get back to you ASAP. Also, check out auntminnie for some great advice and search through their forums; lots of great info!

I know this is almost a year old, but your posts have really helped shed some light on the process. Just wondering, did you end up in Rads?
