I'm seeking advice on what to do with the conflicting advice I've acquired on the topic. My school has advised me to pursue 4-5 auditions in radiology.

However, I've seen some advice on some slightly older sources regarding the number of audition rotations one should complete to be competitive for matching into radiology-diagnostic residency.

Their advice was to complete only one or two radiology auditions in 4th year because it comes across as a "red flag" that the student is lazy and advised to complete other rotations (not auditions) in more foundational medical clerkships to build a better foundation of clinical knowledge and expertise.

I also received advice from a preceptor to not do a bunch of auditions because they don't help as much as they let on and they are costly and that they will "lie straight to your face that they want you and never even rank you."

I try to take everything with a healthy level of skepticism, which is why I'm seeking further advice.

Thanks.

We interview everyone who auditions at our program. But there’s really no way to shine on a radiology rotation as a med student. And it’s hard to not be annoying as a med student. Imagine you’re in pre clinical studying for a test and a premed is there asking you questions about the material. Most people are chill and get it. But some people get grumpy about it.

I would do at most 2 rotations just to make sure you secure a LOR in case one of the places you rotate at flakes. Beyond that, save your money because no one is seeing an app full of radiology rotations and going “wow.” Also, if you apply for a rotation but have to turn it down bc of scheduling or just finding one you want more, it’s fine. No one cares.

Old guard DO advice for anything outside of primary care is audition, audition, audition. I got the same advice. It doesn’t apply to radiology.

I’ve read on here that too many is a red flag as well. Never heard it in real life. I wouldn’t do too many just because you might randomly have to miss half of the rotation to interview which might not look good to a program you’re trying to get into.

Nothing wrong with doing more than 2 aways in any specialty; it only increases your facetime with more programs that will interview you with better rapport.
