Hello all, I just wanted to hear from people about what they know about osteopathic residency programs vs. allopathic residency programs. The reason I ask is I think that it would be a great combination to be an orthopedic surgeon and also be equiped to treat patients in clinic with OMM. So, I guess what I am asking is does a DO residency program incorporate a good amount of OMM? Look forward to hearing some responses!

Uhhh ..... NOPE!

This doesn't really answer the OP's question, but today we had an orthopedic surgeon give a lecture on thoracic inlet for OMM. He told us that he plans on incorporating OMM into his practice once he finishes his fellowship this summer. I think he said he went to Grandview for his residency. So, basically, he feels confident enough with his skills that he plans on using them 6 years after graduating. Just because your residency program doesn't emphasize OMM doesn't mean you can't use it.

Or maybe he was just saying that to avoid the rath of the Osteopathic Gods......

Having observed the OMM component for the residencies at my hospital, I can tell you that in my experience it's all a farce. Most people blow it off and really attend to sign the mandatory sheet. I am a firm believer that you get your strongest OMM training in years 1 and 2 of med school. If you keep you skill sharp you can do fine throughout residency. But, speaking from my limited exposure, OMT is not really emphasized. Especially in surgical specialties.
