OSU Application Status

Wait.... is there some sort of combined MPH/DVM program that I am just unaware of here?

Yes, smileystar is right. You can get your DVM/MPH in 5 years @ OSU, but it does require some work in the summer(s). There are some people in our class who have their 1st year of the vet MPH completed and are now in their 1st year of vet school. But even if you are getting your vet MPH you still have to apply to the vet school just like everyone else.

Now, back to studying cell bio!!

Hey There,

So I just wanted to be clear for the VPH program at OSU. If you do the VPH program, most students do it the year before the enter veterinary school. Then most students finish their VPH as first years. I'm sure its possible to apply to the VPH program after your first year.

However, to be clear, you MUST apply to the veterinary school separately. I just wanted to make sure everyone was on the same page.

For the grades. I came from a school with semesters so I know what its like. Yes, OSU is on the quarter system, which means that your semesters may not measure up quite right. If you have a question, then you should call in my opinion. That's what the admissions people are there for. And wouldn't you hate to have not clarified it, and then not get in because of something so small??

And, only UPenn offers a VMD instead of a DVM.

Also, yes the seat issue seems petty, and honestly it will happen every year. Everyone always told me, that vet school is like high school, and I didn't believe them. Guess what? It is like high school. Everyone knows everybody's business and seats are important. So just start getting used to the idea now.

For the first years, I'll offer this advice to you now. I remember my first Cell Bio exam and I'll be honest, be prepared. You have one professor who I won't mention here, who will say that you just need to know the broad strokes. Don't listen, the questions WILL be nitpicky. I'm just trying to help yall out here.

Oh, and don't forget to take advantage of the tutors and anatomy tutors. We are there to help!!

I hope this helps!!

Ya I kinda figured that the cell bio test would be a bit nitpicky, but that's life right?

I got an email saying that "
We have received your on-line supplemental application for admission to The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine. Thank you for your interest in Ohio State and our veterinary college, the third oldest of the existing veterinary medical colleges in the United States."

Then, this past Wednesday I recieved a second that said "
Thank you for your recent application to The Ohio State University.
Please review your personal data and check the status of your application by visiting the Professional Admissions Office website at http://appstatus.osu.edu. If you find inaccuracies, please notify us immediately so that we may correct our records. In addition, it is your responsibility to inform our office of any changes that occur in the future..." At the bottom of the email, it had the log in info for the page.
That's what I meant by second email-sorry for any confusion.

And there's a THIRD email too! Titled "Checklist Complete e-mail" that says:

"We have received all required documents necessary to complete your application. If you would like to verify that your transcripts have been received, you may contact the Office of Professional Admissions at [email protected]. If you have any additional questions, you may contact the Office of Veterinary Student Affairs at 614-292-8831...

...
We use a rolling admissions process.

  • We review completed files in the order in which they are received.
  • An interview invitation is only possible if your file is complete.
  • The sooner your file is complete, the sooner an interview decision can be made.
  • Check your e-mail frequently for status updates from our office. Keep your application current by notifying us of changes via e-mail.
  • Interview invitations are sent via email. If you are selected for an interview, you should receive an invitation by the end of November."
Though... my status is still "evaluation"

Well I called them today at the Office of Veterinary Student Affairs (614-292-8831) and the lady said that the application status check page is merely the status of ya'lls transcripts. That doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me but she said that the only thing handled by the office that sent the e-mails (they didn't send them) was the transcripts and then they handle everything else.

She also said that we'd be getting application confirmation e-mails as they process everything on their end (as seen above) and which I've not received either, so now I'm really lost.

I know right? Their notifications are really confusing... like they don't really tell you much info at all. But don't worry too much about not having the confirmation email yet. I just received mine today.

Try not to worry? Easier said than done!
I did manage to go almost an entire 12 hours without checking my email or any status pages. I was proud of myself.

Ok, so for all of those waiting to here from OSU CVM. BE PATIENT! Ya I know you don't want to hear that, but you won't be getting an interview notice until mid-late November (I got my notice around Thanksgiving).

As for your status page. All of your information (basically transcript info) goes to the Professional Admissions office first. Thats why your status says "academic review" (or something like that). They have to clear you first and say you have all the required items before your info gets sent to the vet school. Once it passes them, the Vet school receives your info and does an evaluation on who has the credentials to get an interview (roughly half). Your status will appear as "under review" by the Veterinary Admissions committee at this point. Your status will appear like this for a while, maybe even until you have either been accepted, waitlisted, or rejected. Then it will be changed according to what has been offered/declined.

Hope that doesn't stir up too much anticipation.

Good luck and hopefully I will see some of you this winter at interviews.

I received an email saying that my file is complete, yay. No change from status of "AcadReview", and my letters of recommendation status is still initiated, even though the email says they have them.

wait, so Evaluation comes first and then Academic Review for the status? Or is it the other way around?

I got an email saying my application is complete, and yet, on the website my status is still "incomplete." Go figure!

Anyone else not gotten the application complete email?

I finally got the other e-mail by e-mailing them and asking about it and it has me in Academic Review but have yet to get the Application Complete email.

Mine was evaluation now it is academic review.

I think they are still sorting through them. I got mine yesterday afternoon, but it seemed like someone on here got theirs like last week. I would assume they got somewhere between 800-1000 applications. Can you imagine sorting through all that info?! Especially when nothing arrives together!

Yah I was thinking it was just due to sheer volume but since I didn't get the last e-mail until I e-mailed them, I was a bit curious.

I didn't get my email from them until I emailed them to ask about one of my transcripts which was "waived" (still not sure what that means, but at least my app is complete).

anyone know how long it usually takes before your status goes from evaluation to academic review?? i received the email about a week ago now saying that my application was complete but my status still says evaluation

I got an email saying my application was complete, but my status is still listed as incomplete. Go figure?
They won't respond to my emails either, so I really have no idea if they have everything or not. I just get the email that says blah blah blah, too many applicants, not enough time, blah blah blah...

So mine still says evaluation...do most people's say academic review? Will it stay at evaluation if they don't let you in?

I got an email saying mine was complete but the status still says incomplete. I emailed them about something last week and just got a response yesterday.. I think they must just be totally overloaded with information right now.

When did those of you stuck in "evaluation" submit your VMCAS and supplemental applications? Maybe those of us in "academic review" submitted ours earlier, and maybe they were able to move through the earlier ones faster, but now they are backlogged.
I submitted both applications on Sept. 16th.
Anyone else?

I submitted mine Sept. 9th (but I don't think the 80-hours form got faxed in until somewhere around the 20th.) Mine's still on "evaluation."

I don't think that status page is the actual status of your application.

When I called them a while ago trying to find out why I hadn't received the first e-mail, the lady said that all that page is is the status of your transcripts and had nothing to do with the office where they processed everything else.

Ditto. She said that we probably won't see any further updates on that page. The vet school admissions said they can't even stop the university from sending us that email, but they would if they could.
Great....what am I going to obsessively check every day now if that page is useless?!

soooo.... basically even though my status keeps changing (ie incomplete > evaluation > acadreview) i should just ignore this stuff?? i am so anxious

Got an email yesterday that I would have two prerequisites left to complete in the winter quarter, which is one more than they allow. I had to send in a petition that must be approved to be able to still be considered for the 2010 cycle.
I may have taken myself out of the race for Ohio. I knew about that rule, but didn't think they would want me to take two quarters of biochem. I have to take the second quarter of biochem and a genetics course next quarter. It was impossible for me to enroll in genetics and biochem this quarter because my school only offered one section of each, and they are at the same time! Lame.
I emailed them my petition yesterday, and was told I will receive a phone call when a decision is made as to whether I can still be considered.
I also emailed the office that evaluates prereques to make sure I really need both quarters of biochem.
I'm gonna want my money back!

That sounds really stressful... i'm sorry! I hope it works out!!!! 🙄

Got the call today. They denied my petition. 🙁 I asked under what circumstances do they ever accept a petition, and she said that they take into account your entire application. It was very vague, but I'm guessing that they could tell I wasn't going to get in anyway.
I am having the office that evaluates prerequisites take a look at the class in question just to double check they really need that second quarter of biochem.
If I really wanted to fight I could enroll in a genetics course online, and then I wouldn't have both classes to take next quarter. I feel like that would just be pushing it. If they looked at my application and saw that they wanted me they probably would have approved my petition.
I will just hang onto hope for my other three schools.

Sorry to hear about that Squibby. I think these 'rules' about having to have only one pre-req outstanding in the spring semester are unfortunate. If I had wanted to apply as an undergrad that would have completely bumped me out for another year as well...I didn't decide to even go into Biology until my sophomore year and I spent the next two and a half years playing catch up just to graduate on time.

That sucks. Good luck with the next three :luck:

Yea, I've had to submit a petition regarding the pre-reqs as well, but I haven't heard back.

The gen chemistry requirement is 15 quarter hours, which I believe cooresponds to 3 semester classes, but my college only had two 'college chemistry' classes. Aside from orgo, any other chemistry classes I could have taken would have been something like p-chem or another upper level. Could somebody pls breakdown for me how they fullfilled the 15 quarter hours. I've sent any email to somebody at OSU but no response yet. Thanks!

15 quarter hours is just over 10 semester hours, and my general bio classes have all been 5 semester units each. Did you find out what the specific problem is?

Assuming your classes had labs and it was a standard 2 course chem series I wouldn't worry about it too much.

(of course what I think means nothing until you hear it from the school)

I've applied to OSU twice before this year and both times I had 8 semester hours of gen chem (2 semesters with labs). I also have 7 credits of orgo and 3 of biochem. I never submitted a petition and they have never expressed any problem with it.

Part of this may be based on the school that you attended for undergraduate. We all know that all courses are not created equal, nor are all professors created equally.

I had one case, not with OSU, but with Michigan State where I had to submit my description of my class and they contacted my professor to determine if they covered the right stuff so that I could have that course count.

And, I went to the a big Ten school! I didn't have any problems either, but I could imagine if you went to a smaller school that you would have even more problems. I had a friend who went to a very small private school, and she had to do this for the majority of her classes, because no one at the veterinary school had even heard of her undergraduate school.

Maybe that's part of the reason, but I'm just hypothesizing (and procrastinating from studying cardio!)

It depends more on the content than units, really. I wish there was some kind of interstate articulation tool like I have for CA public schools. I know that would be ridiculously hard to build and maintain though.

So I also had to submit a petition today... so I'll let ya'll know what i hear!!!!! Keep your fingers crossed that they have mercy on me 😛

Good luck. It took them three days to get back to me with an answer. I wish they would have given me a real answer when I asked what kind of circumstance would make them approve a petition. Definitely let us know what they tell you.

no deal 🙁 But i just don't have time to think about that right now! 😎

I just got an interview invite in my email!!!! :-D

quick question, i doubt you have checked because you are probably jumping up and down like i did when i got missouris invite, but did your status page change yet? mine still says academic review

gahh, mine just turned to evaluation today. how long does it take in evaluation to get to academic review?

I am going to OSU for my interview next week. Does anyone know how long they take to send you a decision letter after the interviews?

Hey There,

It depends on how much they liked you. OSU used to be a rolling decision school, though now that they have condesed interviews so much, I don't know how they are doing it now.

But they could let some people know right away as in like 5 min after their interview. Others they may hold off and then split them between waitlist and acceptance. So, I guess the answer is, it depends.

Rock that interview!
