OSU-COM Discussion Thread 2009-2010

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Does OSU give any kind of feedback about your interview or application? I know they give advice on how to enhance your application, but do they give you any information about what may have went wrong? 😕
So is it wishful thinkging for more calls on Monday? 🙄

Maybe wishful thinking, but not beyond possibility.

It seems like they would provide some kind of feedback about your interview, but I don't really know. Are you going to retake the January MCAT if you are waitlisted?

OUCH - no call for me! Sad face. I thought for sure from my all my stats/ec's/interviews. Congrats to you Marsh and Big Dog! I'm envious.

I guess I'll have to call on Monday and see what the hold up is. Anyone else get the good news today?

Sorry Rev, do you mind recapping your stats, state residency, etc?

Btw did you check and see if they had an accurate phone number on file for you? Small chance there...

Sorry man...after meeting you, I can't imagine you not being accepted off the waitlist if that is what ends up happening. Keep us all posted regarding what Lindsey tells you on Monday. Good luck to you

I'm interviewing on 11/30, anyone else have that same date? Anyone care to share their interview day experiences/give advice?

Hate to sound ignorant, but what is Med-X?

I have my interview on 11/30 too!!!!

WOW Rev no call for you...that is weird 😱! I didn't get one either, but that is what I expected from all that went on...but keep your head up, I am sure they will see us again next year! Someone told me throughout this process that whatever you are supposed to do is already planned!

Let us know what Lindsey says about everything. I'm just awaiting to postal letter, then I think I will call!

About the MCAT...I am MCAT challenged and would love to never have to take it again (because after all a 22 did get me an interview...but also along with the interview probably put me in the lower score)! If I do take it again I am thinking more in early summer so I have time to prepare again! I am waiting to hear the advice they give me! Congrats once again and I am just as shocked as you are about Rev!

I didn't know your Mcat was so low (not trying to sound mean). I think that may have been the greatest hinderance for you though. You interview may have bot helped you but i still don't think it hurt you

I am definately going to take it again, because it won't hurt me by no means but I just feel that if that was the breaker then they wouldn't have interviewed me (that is where I am confused). But I was surprised to even get an interview which I am thankful for because now I know what to expect for next year (I'm armed and ready)! (don't worry you didn't sound mean...i've heard it a lot and realize that I was lucky this time, I've tried to keep my GPA up to outweigh the awful MCAT)

I was told by Lindsey that OSU makes an attempt to interview every eligible in state applicant, so while your MCAT is low you are still an eligible candidate. I would guess that the mcat was a major reason, but the season is not over. They could very easily waitlist you and accept you after another round or two

What does eligible mean? Grades, MCAT, pre-reqs, and D.O. letter?

Their website says they get 302 in-state applications and conduct 177 interviews. I guess people apply that are not eligible.

All of that, eligible in every way. Some people apply that aren't eligible (seems strange huh)
I met with her in March and had her review my file and that is what she told me. Also she said "make an attempt", some years I am sure it is just not possible. I know of a couple people with sub-21 MCAT scores that said they were going to apply, don't know if they ever did. Kind of along the same lines, I know a predental student that applied to a dental school that the minumum for an interview was a 17 on DAT and she had a 16. She figured what the heck do I got to lose so I'll give it a shot.

Also seems unthinkable that at every MED-X they stress over and over to apply early. They get a lot of applicants applying in Feb, March, April (since their deadline is in April I think) so while they are eligible they most likely have missed the interview dates. Getting your application in earlier usually results in an interview with lower stats (or so I've been told).

That does sound strange, but like you said, I guess it happens. I wonder if when you reapply they consider you a 2nd time applicant, maybe it is actually quite smart to that..just to be considered a reapp the next year.

Probably the most plausible explanation

You know I have heard that OU and OSU likes reapplicants (shows dedication) but here on SDN in other threads a reapplicant is like a four letter word.

I don't think it is a deal breaker, it is just early in the application season and they may want to see the other applicants before they decide on your file. It has been said over and over but here goes, OSU loves to waitlist and it is not always a bad thing to be on it.

I know, whats up with that. I think if you improve your app, whether through additional activities and exp. or MCAT, you still improved your app. I took the MCAT 3 times and made the same score with a very different distribution every time, but I improved in other areas. I would tell all the skeptics to go to a four letter word.

OU has thier interview equation, which is stpuid...just my opinion. I dont think OSU uses such a system

AMEN! I think this website is great, but you definitely have to pick and chose the advice on here that makes sense and that you want to follow.

That equation is not gospel, someone I know proved that this year. I agree OSU uses something different. What that is I have no idea, but I am glad since it worked for me.

Yes, I have heard the same about their equation but I still do not like the notion. I am happy for your friend though.

Congratulations! They called me on Thursday, too. 🙂

Did you get your UPS? Sarah told me it would be here Monday. Apparently there was a mix up with UPS....when I saw the words mix up in that email this was my face :scared:

Stats refresh:
3.8 cGPA, 3.75 sGPA, and 26P MCAT
Lots of ECs and interview went well

No telling - I'll let you guys know what gets told to me on Monday. I was really hoping to relax over Thanksgiving. Looks like it'll be nail biting!

Your stats are fine, above average on GPA and right at average on MCAT. FYI, someone at my school got an email on Friday about their UPS package having a problem (like others UPS problem). Funny thing is he never got a call saying he got in. He called on Friday and OSU said "nobody called you?"
I would wait until whichever letter arrives before you call, just my $0.02
I asked in my interview what should I do if I was to be waitlisted, my interviewers told me to call Sarah or Lindsey to find out any information they could give me about my application and the decision.

Really, I wonder what this means.

Rev I think you're on par and maybe your phonecall could have been accedentally skipped. You have close stats to myself and so I can imagine what held you back. Get that call to Lindsey on Monday and check it out.

On a side note, this thread seems to be growing at an exponential rate. Since the last time I looked there's been alot of posts!

Yeah - I kept looking at my phone on Friday so intensely that I think I was fixing to stare a hole in it! I keep hoping that I got skipped and that UPS will be at my house Monday or Tues.

OSU is my first choice!
After being at other interviews, the entire atmosphere at OSU is different - and different in a GOOD way. Hard to put my finger on it, it just feels like a place and a group of people that you want to be around, learn from, and practice medicine with.

They're just playing hardball, keep your chin up sport....

Did I just say that? Lol

I've been to some other medical schools (allopathic and osteopathic) and OSU was my favorite experience because it fosters a familial atmosphere. Something I strongly desire. Family like atmosphere seldom seen in medical schools, I think.

precisely one reason why i am thrilled to be going there!

Haha, I was in the same boat. She told me there was a mix up, and I'm positive that my heart stopped beating. She said hopefully on Monday?

You said it best! Family like atmosphere that fosters teamwork and caring relationships. The Doc I work with graduated from OSU in the 80's and still keeps in touch with his class.

I got an interview for Nov. 30th! Do you all know by any chance what percentage of people who get interviews get accepted? (I'm OOS.) And how long would you say the wait is until they let you know whether you are accepted or not?

This link has been posted on the thread already, but it has all of the information regarding your chances. Getting an interview is a big step 1377 OOS apps, 36 OOS interviews, and 15 accepted. I think you made it over a big hurdle.

http://www.healthsciences.okstate.edu/student/admissions/matrprofile.cfm

As far as time until they let you know, they told us in-staters two weeks, but I think it is longer for OOS apps. If they are only going to interview 36 out of 1377, I think they would want to interview most of them before they start accepting. No basis for this info, just a thought. I'm sure others will comment on this.

Good afternoon everyone,
I just called Sarah to ask her about when to expect any mail and she told me that they sent everything out late on Friday. I checked my mail this morning and there wasn't anything from them so I assume Tuesday I will get it. I am not sure how UPS works. Also about interview feedback, Sarah told me that Lindsay will go over that stuff. Congrats again to all those accepted and good luck to those with interviews after Thanksgiving! I promise the stress melts away when you walk in the building! 😎

UPS delivery times vary, mine around 1-2, others I know show up around 5. Keep your fingers crossed at least for the next couple of hours

I am in my cube at work (the walls are a horrible green color, just to provide a visual), I hope my ups is sitting on the front porch when I get home. If waitlist letters went out on Friday, they should arrive this afternoon. The postal service delivers in the afternoon, UPS is afternoon or evening, depending on where you are on the route.

Sorry to those that didn't get accepted immediately however if waitlisted, its not a bad thing! Waitlist is rather important so hold on and keep updating your status and improvements.

Out of curiosity, when do you have to turn it in? Ours was Dec 15, just wondering if yours is later or the same. Also thought I'd let you know it was nice weather on the golf course yesterday

I spoke to someone today that interviewed on Friday the 20th, she said they were told they that OSU was going to try and let them know before Thanksgiving. Thats awful quick.
