Hey guys, I don't have much to offer about OSU except that my best friend goes there and she likes the school but HATES Columbus. I mean really really really hates it there. To the point where she was considering withdrawing from school and doing something else. So, I would def look in to that if I were you. Otherwise, OSU is probably one of the top schools out there.

I've lived in Columbus my whole life and I concur. The city is a city...In my opinion, most of them aren't that nice. It is a fantastic school though, and it is just 4 years of your life.

It's hard for out of state students to get into. My friends at OSU tell me that the out of state students are the cream of the crop. It seems like they are particular about accepting lots of Ohio residents (nearly a 50% in state acceptance rate).

Hey guys, it's nice to see OSU being discussed again. I was accepted a couple weeks ago and I'm an out of stater. I've posted my stats before, but here they are again: GPA 3.51, TS 350, AA 350. I think I was pretty competitive, but I don't know about cream of the crop. IMO, OSU is really looking for interesting people. If you get an interview and let them know that you're interesting it seems like you'd have a very good chance regardless of your state residency.
I didn't stay in Columbus long enough to accurately judge the city, but my overall impressions were positive. The school is amazing though, and that's good enough for me. Best of luck OSU applicants. GO BUCKEYES!!!

i really enjoyed my interview at ohio state and thought the faculty was very inviting and friendly...but i just don't know...

im trying to decide between osu and indiana...and im having a really tough time! any feedback/opinions would be helpful!!

I am applying to medical school for 2007, but I attended OSU for 3 years of grad school. I can honestly say the city is what you make of it. If you want to be anonymous, that is fairly easy, because most people will not acknowledge your existence. However, most all of the people will talk to you if you engage them first. There is plenty to do. There is the Arena district, which is home to the Columbus Bluejackets, and there are many bars, if that's your thing. There are also many movie theatres and shopping. The three big shopping areas are Easton, Polaris, and Tuttle malls. There is a small shopping area called the Lennox. I drove down High Street a couple times since graduation, and OSU has added probably about a 25 million dollar shopping area, including a Barnes and Nobles. It really looks state of the art, almost like you could be in Tokyo, this coming from a person who has traveled abroad a lot. All in all, you can stay to yourself or basically do whatever it is you want. Bottom line is that Columbus is home of Buckeye football and that should be the deciding factor in anyone's decision🙂

Even though i was not an OSU optometry student, my friend from high school and my grad school roommate were. My roommate never really complained about class other than he had to work his tail off. He was the president of his class and a couple times had other students over for dinner or what not. He is currently in Arizona doing a one year residency in pathological disease. They all seemed as though they enjoyed school, especially being able to go to the OSU football games🙂 Even though I don't have a complete insider's perspective, it appears from the caliber of students I came across that you won't find a finer institution for optometry in the country.

I think OSU looks like a very good OD school, but I personally didn't apply there because of the high (out of state) tuition. Has anyone else noticed that it is much higher than other schools?

I was just wondering how long it took the admissions committee to ask you for an interview at OSU after you applied.

I applied by the end of October and have not heard from them yet… it's making me nervous.

Does failing and then retaking a prereq class decrease the chances for admission? Will both grades be calculated into the admissions GPA?

Im not sure how osu calculates in the failing and retaken grade, but i failed orgo 1 the first time around then got a 3.0 in it and got into osu. they did ask me in my interview why i failed the class. they were the first of 4 schools to straight up ask me why i failed, but i guess i gave a decent awnser because i got accepted right after the interview. So just be able to explain yourself and you should be good!

Yeah, it seems like OSU doesn't necessarily want out of staters to be the cream of the crop like I was told. A current OSU Opt student told me that, but I guess that just isn't the case!

This is what I would echo from my experience interviewing here at OSU. The admissions committee is very sharp, so you can count on them asking you about any little weak spot in your application--not a bad thing since we all probably have a place where we could improve--so just be prepared for that.

I was caught a little off-guard when they asked me why my OAT score was so high but my GPA relatively low in comparison. I fumbled a little and said that I could have done better, but wasn't mature enough then to memorize the Krebs Cycle in full detail only to be tested on one reaction from it. So naturally, he asked me right away if I would be up for the academics in the 1st year curriculum...I said that I would be b/c it's important to have that background knowledge to be a good OD, but man was I sweating that exchange after the interview!

So just be honest with yourself and try and anticipate those types of questions...I thought I was going in with a good OAT score to prove I was serious about opt school, but what I was really doing was showing them that I was smart enough...but maybe wasn't a hard enough worker? 😉

In response to those who think the out-of-state tuition is outrageous at OSU, I believe the reason is that you can change your residency status after the first year to in-state, whereas other schools do not allow this. For those of you who have no intention of staying in Ohio, it may not sound that appealing, but it is a way to make a great school like OSU a little more affordable. I have lived in Columbus my whole life (except one year in NYC) and I think its a great place to live and cost of living is super cheap (balancing that $40,000 tuition a little)

Just for the record -- SUNY also allows this (for US citizens only). Tuition goes from $26K to half that after the first year.

All of the interview spots are getting filled quickly so unfortunately they were only able to schedule my interview in February 🙁 It's a little late since more than half of the class will be filled by then. I have a good GPA but not so good OAT score and having an interview this late doesn't help the situation. I am just hoping for the best at this point.

I had an interview in February at OSU and I was accepted. GPA 3.84, OAT science 360, OAT overall 350 and I am out of state. Still deciding between UMSL and OSU (financial reasons, and location). I heard that they are not letting people know about how they did after the interview lately...perhaps because the seats are getting full. Also, I wouldn't get discouraged though because many people are deciding and you have to committ $225 to OSU but if you decide you don't want to go there, you can get all but $25 of it back, so OSU doesn't really force you to loose a lot of money by saving your seat. Make sure that your application is complete too...the office is really nice about retrieving that information for you.

I'm an undergrad student at OSU and I personally love Columbus and OSU. I'm from NE Ohio. I pretty much never want to leave and intend to stay there for school, whatever medical-ish type career I pursue. I've got the prereques for med school, optometry school, and dental school 😛
