As the days count down and my match list is getting done I am struggling with my top 2 picks. I loved both Ohio State and NYU and realize NYU probably is the stronger program but to me the location of NY is not desirable at all and much rather be in columbus. Would I be doing myself a diservice but choosing OSU over NYO-as far as later fellowship opps or jobs? I am not interested in academia.

If you don't like NYC, don't go to NYU. There'll be jobs available for you no matter where you go. The only career benefit would be if you were planning on an academic career in NYC, which you say you are not.

However I am interested in doing a fellowship and would like to be able to have my pick or atleast pretty much my pick of where I want to go for it and what I can get into-that is the other factor affecting my decision but thanks for the input!

You'll be fine. If you like Columbus, stay in Columbus. You'll still have "your pick" of all but the most academically-oriented fellowship programs (and even those would still be possible, depending on how you use your residency years.) There's more to OSU than football (I guess...though I don't know what...🙄 )

There's no doubt that NYU will impress most anyone on a fellowship application more than OSU, or most other programs in the country, for that matter. But I think that if you have strong letters and do a little extra, you can get the fellowship you like in most cases.

Keep in mind that in NYC, it's currently about 15 degrees, and I feel like my face is going to freeze and crack off when I step outside.

Needless to say, our ER is "busy" with cold homeless people who inevitably need "psych consults because they're depressed." 😡

Sounds like a you've made a decision, or should have.

As DS said, if you wanted an academic career in NYC then I would definitely say NYU, but if you know you have no intention of going there don't worry about it.

I think you'd be doing yourself a disservice to go somewhere you'll be unhappy. 🙂

On the other hand, we put off a lot of our lives, consistently rationalizing that it's only x number of years more, and then I'll start living. But you have to ask yourself is that end goal worth the wait, and how long should you really wait to start living. You should be able to enjoy all of your life, including residency.

I remember on my surgery rotation we got a psych consult on a patient, the opinion of which was "Some minor depression and anxiety." My surgery resident scoffed and said "whatever, that's residency." I thought that statement was so sad.

If you don't plan to end up in NYC, don't go to NYU.

Thanks for all the input guys. I actually do not at all want to end up in columbus but I have lived on both coasts and went to school on different coasts in my life and the only place I have not lived is the midwest and I really like the program and the people in columbus-I have no ties there and want to move back west when done so I do not want to factor in wanting to stay there.

So besides going to the place which makes you happy-the deficit is not huge with OSU-The psych was apparently was in the USNEWS top psych programs (which only lists 20 I believe) 3 years ago but not anymore, so who knows. Well thanks again!
