What is up with Ohio state's number of pre-reqs compared to some other schools?

Have any of you who are interviewing now been accepted there and can you give me some information about what it was like applying/interviewing? I know this is a very general request but I did a search and there has not been very much discussion about Ohio State. I'm especially interested in your experiences & stats if you are not an Ohio resident. I'm not so concerned about Columbus living or that sort of thing as much as when you applied, when you took OAT, what they asked on the interview, etc.

Thanks.

Yeah, I wish there were more talk about OSU too, but here is my experience. I think the required pre-reqs are a little more extensive than other schools, but I think they want to know how well you can handle the more difficult classes like human phys., and biochem. They did ask me about these classes during the interview.

For me, I applied in early Sept, and didn't take the OAT until late Nov. I didn't get an interview invite until after they received the OAT score, and I had my interview Jan 18th and was accepted the same day. I am from Ohio by the way. My stats: GPA 3.80, OAT, 340 TS and 330 AA.

The interview was very relaxed and the questions were basic and pretty general, they just want to get to know you, and to see that you are prepared for the step into Optometry school. As long as you know yourself and why you want to be an Optometrist you will be fine.

Good Luck

But you had all the pre-reqs done before then? I will be applying end of summer/start of fall, take the OAT same time, but will not have taken human phys or biochem until this coming year though. Wondering how bad that is going to hurt me. Also I took calc without taking trig... hopefully they won't make me take trig. I'm going to visit the school in a couple weeks to go over this but wanted to get some feedback here as well.

I was really in the same situation as you when it comes to those two classes, when I applied I still haven't had human phys, I just took it last fall, and I am taking biochem right now. I just took Ochem I in the fall too, so when I applied I had all three of these classes yet to take. I don't think taking them late will hurt your application at all, they just need you to pass the class before you start optometry school. As for the trig and calc question, I am not sure.

Thanks so much for the feedback! 🙂

OSU was a school i was very interested in so i had incorporated the pre-reqs into my 4 years so when i interviewed in November i was taking or had taken all the pre reqs. I got in the same day as well but i chose to turn it down and here's why:
1. Their out of state tuition is super high ($46k). even with in-state tuition after the first year its still really high with all the student fees and stuff.
2. The only part of the opt school that has been somewhat recently renovated was the research area that only the profs and students working on their MS get access to. The clinic that most students use has not been renovated for a while. ALSO, since they've renovated (its been a few years) the only part of the school thats all cluttered is the area where students get to use computers and where the students take breaks. it was a complete mess, you could only get to 4 computers, if that. That tells you a lot about where their priorities are.
3. I didn't learn anything from their interview. They show you a video when you get there and take you on a rushed tour. i got to ask questions in my actual interview and the interviewers were really nice but i left not really having a good sense of everything like the other schools. Also there was a lot of waiting around.
Overall it was disappointing. I think i built up OSU in my head and when i got there it wasn't all what i was expecting. I think i just got excited b/c it is a big university. I did like the area and all the students i got to meet were super friendly and welcoming but there's so much more to that when you consider which school to choose.
BTW as far as the pre reqs go: i think its really important to take biochem regardless of which school you attend. And i heard that they started making physio a requirement b/c of the performance in the class. apparently its a tough class to pass. hope that helps🙂
