Just curious, does anyone have horses or partake in equestrian activities here?

I used to event and do dressage.

In fact, I chose pharmacy due to the idea that it would allow me the time and money to ride. Almost accepted a job post-residency in southern pines, NC so I could be in Mecca.

But PGY-2 taught me that I really, really like urban living.

And being realistic taught me that I'll probably never compete at FEI levels.
So I live in a city and just sold the last 90% of my tack and blankets, etc.
Just kept one saddle pad, my dressage saddle, a helmet, my boots... Maybe I'll take some lessons, maybe I won't.

You?

Awesome! My GF events at the preliminary level and I was at a show this past weekend. I ride for fun although I think I do want to try showing sometime. I made this thread because I wanted to see if there were pharmacists who still had time to event even while working. Since both of us are in pharmacy school. I would like to see her continue doing it because she is extremely talented.

So to answer your question yes I ride quite often. I've found out jumping is pretty easy but dressage is damn hard!

If you chose to keep eventing would you still have time with work?

I work 4 10 hour shifts a week, and don't go in to work until noon. So if I wanted to, I think I could definitely make it work. Especially if I lived near the barn. I'm just not as hardcore as I was as a teenager.

Good deal. Thanks for sharing.

Do you still own a horse?

I still have a pony I've had since I was 10. He's leased out and teaching little girls how to ride.

This is the first year I haven't gone to Rolex in ages. I'm a little sad, but it always makes me want to ride!

Cute. ponies are fun to ride. I ride a quarter horse mainly and she rides an OTTB.

I wanted to go to Rolex this year but its the same week as finals. 🙁 hopefully they will have some on TV.

I know what you mean whenever I go to a show it makes me want to ride. Haha

That's the OTTB I had in high school. Ended up selling him right before I started pharmacy school.

This is her OTTB he is a great horse. They buy and sell horses and I swear the OTTBs are the best.

Yes I had three horses at one point and worked full time as a pharmacist. I rode one of them at least 5 days per week and worked the other two about 3 times per week each. I did mostly dressage with a little jumping. Majority of my free time was spent at the barn but I enjoyed it. My barn I boarded at was 35 min from my house but my hospital was 5 minutes.

Awesome. Good to hear. You don't ride any longer though?

No I dont. I couldnt afford it financially with all my student loans and other debt. Yes pharmacists make alot of money but eventing with horses costs lots of $$$$. And I just couldnt afford it even being single and only having one horse. I was paying about $1,000 a month in board, farrier, and one lesson and training ride a week. No money left over to trailer to shows, entry fees and all that.

Ahhh I see. Board is way expensive. We luckily have 10 acres now and keep them there. Hopefully ill be able to afford enough land after graduation.

I can't decide if I want to take lessons again or not. Every time I do, someone wants to lease a horse to me, or offers me something to ride regularly, and it just spirals out of control.

I kept my dressage saddle (I seriously love it so much) and my boots/helmet. But I finally got rid of everything else.

Yea I'm keeping my dressage saddle, boots and helmet. Trying to sell the rest. all those random stuff like bell boots, extra halter, extra unused bits. If someone wants that stuff for free pm me

I donated it all to pony club and wrote it off on my taxes.

The only thing I'm actually selling is my jumping saddle.

Good idea! except I'm not itemizing my taxes but I'd feel better that they went to a good place. I am going to sell my AP saddle and blankets.
