I have a client ( I am currently an LMT ) who worked as a PTA for years before becoming an MOT, and is now able to bill for both. When I asked her if that combo was valuable 'in the real world' ie: is she more of a commodity to her employers? Is she earning more since she can bill both services?; she gave me a very brief, "YEs, of course,". Since it is a professional, therapeutic relationship I didn't feel it was appropriate for me to ask her for more details, but it got me wondering. I know about St. Aug. dual DPT/OTD, but have read on this site many people discounting it as completely ridiculous/overkill.

So, I'm wondering is there any 'real world' value to being able to bill as a PTA and OT? Now, obviously there will be real world value for the educational and hands on experience, but does that translate into anything tangible ie: higher income earned or better job opportunities/security?

Interested to hear your thoughts on this.

My thoughts initially go towards it being a great thing for everyone involved, but doing some quick and light research on PTA (never looked at that before) turned up some billing issues for PTA -- mainly many insurance companies moving towards not covering PT services performed by PTAs, which would completely destroy any benefits to the dual licensing. Of course, we can never know which way the winds of HealthCare billing will blow. However, as a Licensed Massage Therapist for over a decade I can say that it dramatically redefined my practice when we lost the ability to bill Florida PIP insurance coverage for rehabilitative massage in treatment of auto accident related injuries.

It would work out well in home care.

Only talked to people with DPT/OT. They get a bit more but I'm not sure if the extra cost is worth it.
