This may seem like a weird place to ask this, but I've found you all to be pretty friendly, and sensible, so I hope you won't mind:

My wife is finishing her residency, and the program is having a ceremony for the occasion in a few weeks. I realized that I have no idea what an appropriate gift would be, or even if it's a gift-appropriate occasion. I guess the attendings here, having been through the "finished with residency" phase already, might have the most insight, but I'd appreciate any advice y'all have.

Thanks!

Is there something she enjoys that she hasn't had time or money to do (or have) because of residency? Has she dropped hints about what she wants? Our program had a ceremony where the class below us got gifts (each PGY3 got assigned a PGY4) but there wasn't a public exchange of gifts otherwise. Dinner at her favorite restaurant or a nice vacation (pending time and funds) would be reasonable unless she's clearly hinting she want something big ticket.

As an aside, the time from last paycheck of residency to first paycheck of attendinghood is substantial so if you're splurging have enough left to survive ~45 days (June 30th to August 15 is pretty standard) without her paycheck.

Sleep is the first thing that come to mind. 🙂

Unfortunately, no, she hasn't been dropping hints. I will have to find a way to try and coax it out of her, I guess. But this has been very helpful advice, thank you! I have a few ideas now, assuming she doesn't start dropping any hints.

Also, she'll be starting a fellowship more or less immediately after her residency (at the same place, even), so the road to attendinghood is a little longer still...

There was another thread on here not long ago about "graduation gifts", and the sentiment was "a nice workbag" is a good solid gift. I love mine. I really, really do.

I'm still thinkin' for yah, bud. At work just now.

My wife got a nice leather one as a program gift for graduation from fellowship. She promptly gave it to me, but I have appreciated it. To OP, spa day at someplace nicer than Massage Envy is never a bad idea.

not to hijack the thread - what I'd really like (not for graduation, just for kicks) is a cool, antique-looking brass/bronze pocketwatch.

Dunno. Maybe that sparked an idea somewhere.

I thought I wanted this too so I got one. It looked great but I quickly found it to be a pain to carry around since my cell phone already told me the time. And I didn't dig the extra clutter in my pockets.

Then I thought: "OK no biggie I'll just use it for special occasions." First time I broke it out at a wedding it became clear that I shouldn't use it again until I resemble Wilford Brimley.

It you're committed/don't mind full pockets then go for it.
