Do Asians or Whites have a better chance of getting accepted to Med school?
My Iraqi friend wants to list his Race on the application, but there is no space for Iraqi. Would he list it under Asian as Other?
Do you need to be fluent in a language in order to list that language?

Your friend is an arab. Arabs are white... For example, although egypt is in africa, egyptians are also white... AMCAS is talking about race, not nationality.

The person should be able to hold a conversation in that language if s/he wants to put it on the application. Too many people I've heard about walk into their interviews, only to find someone who wants to interview them in their "second language".

I think both Asians and whites have a tougher time with med school application, with Asians being an over-represented minority and whites being the majority.

But as others said, Arabs=ethnically white, and no messing around with that.

Is he better off putting White or Not listing it at all?
do asians or whites have an easier time getting into med school overall?

Relative to whom and in what way?
Whites and Asians don't get points for their race, because they are not Under Represented.
However, some might argue that being white especially might give you a hidden "boys club" advantage, as well as the general socio-economic trends relative to under represented groups. What really will matter is when he shows up to interview. I think that Other would be justified for middle eastern, but it really won't make a difference in the end, so have him pick the one he feels is correct.

I personally select Other or Middle Eastern if that's an option. The posts above are 100% correct, the papers they gave us state that everyone of Arabic descent is Caucasian... Your friend probably has the same indifferent attitude about as I in general, but when it comes to actually having to identify with something, I say I'm Middle Eastern (even though that's definitely not a race)

As for whether white/asian people having a better shot at an acceptance, the answer is no. More are accepted in comparison to other races/ethnicity because whites are the majority and usually have more advantages and asians are geniuses (ok, that's a generalization, but can you blame me?)

What do you mean by: "general socio-economic trends relative to under represented groups."
I don't see an OTHER category on the application by itself.
There is an OTHER category within the ASIAN category.

does a disadvantaged applicant have a better chance of getting into med school? why or why not?
for example, if immediate family members have used federal assistant programs, etc.

For race there is only:
other is not as its own category
