Hello Everyone,

So I am choosing between an MD and a DO school. I wanted to know what you all think I should do.

I really liked OU-HCOM the DO school but I liked the MD school Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine if not the same or more.

I have received $26,000 out of the $31,00 for tuition and fees. The problem is I have to let them know in the next few weeks. WSU doesn't begin to give out scholarships until February then until April.

I am interested in neurology, neurosurgery, and EM if that helps.

I'd like to get involved with going abroad one day.

I am hoping WSU gives me some money. I am also filling out outside scholarships. I hope you all can give me an opinion.

OU can get you into all those specialities, although Neurosurgery would be easier to get into if you went to Wright State. I don't think you would get HUGE advantage going to Wright state though since Neurosurgery residencies are never easy to get anyway.

You may want to consider putting down a deposit at OU now and waiting on Wright state to see if they give you any money. If they do you can just forfeit the deposit at OU and go to Wright, if not than you still have a spot saved at OU. Either way I think your best bet is to go with the money.

Honestly, any qualms about MD-vs-DO are grossly overshadowed by an almost-full-ride scholarship. Take the money and run with it.

OU-HCOM is a great DO school and their new association with the Cleveland Clinic is a plus for clinical years. The scholarship is a MAJOR factor here though. The only problem I foresee is that Wright State keeps all doors open if you do really well. If you end up changing and want to do something very competitive, it will be harder to do so at OU. This being said, those specialties are even hard to do at OU. I would put the deposit down at OU (if I remember it is rather small for a DO school) and wait it out to see what Wright State says. I'm not sure OU is strong enough to use their scholarship as a bargaining chip, but you may be able to bring it up and see what Wright State does.

Guys, I'm sorry. I deposited months ago. This scholarship offer was a bargaining chip.

I'm sorry I left that out.

what would be the final cost of attendance at each after 4 years (with scholarship amount factored in)?

144,000 vs. About 25,000 just looking at tuition. But I haven't and won't hear from Wright State until the February or March

If four years of med school costs less than one semester of undergrad I think you know what to do.

That's excluding living expenses and rent and all that jazz. However, I agree. I have to wait and see what Wright does.

I'd get the MD for 100k extra. For 200k I'd start thinking about it. Just a quick look at where Wright State placed there "O-surgeons" this year (quantity and quality) for what is otherwise a non brand name school. It appears they crank out EM residents as well to places like Duke, Ohio State, Emory UVa and UTSW.

I can't find a match list on Ohio's website, but they say they send ~50% to osteopathic residences. Just something to think about.

This isn't even a question. Unless you're 100% set on rural primary care, always go MD.

Sorry to pull rank but I'd take advice from premeds and preclinical med students with a grain of salt.

Many residencies still won't even interview DO students and others will only consider those at the top of their class with very high board scores. Your chances at competitive residencies in certain locations will be significantly decreased.

120K is a small amount in the long run and definitely not worth giving up a shot at your top choice residencies 4 years from now.

(Not to mention some countries don't even recognize DOs if you want to do global health work)
