Quick question, has anyone heard about whether or not you can attend OUCOM and use a military scholarship? I know OUCOM makes you sign a contract to practice in the state of ohio, so how would this work with HSPS? Just disregard the OU contract?

Yes, OUCOM does allow the military scholarships. I'm not exactly sure how a non-resident situation would work though.

Doc where were you stationed, and were you with Marines?

Sure was. I was with 2/2 out of lejeune. How about you?

When were you guys there and when are you applying? I was in NC from 2003 to 2006.

I was at lejeune from 2003 to 2006. I am applying to med school next year, havent decided if I want to do HSPS or not. If I do, ill probably do Air Force!

Why Air Force? I was thinking going Navy if I decide to go.

If I knew for sure that I could be stationed with Marines, I would go into the Navy as a physician. If the Marine Corps had them, I would be be gone without a doubt!

Military matches, more sea service, and bell bottoms are such negative influences.

That is exactly what I was thinking. I would think that as soon as they found out you wanted to be stationed with the Marines that they would let you. I always thought that my Navy physician couldn't stand Marines.

Because I wouldnt want to get stationed with the Marines as a GMO (which they are trying to phase out...now they will have board certified physicians doing it). I was a corpsman with a marine infantry unit and none of the doctors that did a tour with us did anything! the IDC's and corpsman did ALL patient care, the bn surgeon just signed off on physicals.

When in a forward area, theres usually (not always of course) a surgical company and a shock trauma platoon that take all causualties..so once again the bn surgeon sits on his heads

Plus, I really dont want to be the personal physician of a very healthy population of 18-25yr olds. I would much rather be in a hospital treating patients that may actually be sick

OP, (backing up BitingPlates) OUCOM does accept HPSP students. Point being, I'm a current student of OU and also a HPSP recipient. The contract to stay and work in OH after your residency is applicable only if you are an out-of-state student. If you are an Ohio resident, then that contract doesn't apply to you, so you can go anywhere you want after graduation. Even with the contract, if you did primary care, your time in OH (pending you're OOS) is shorter than those who specialize. For military students, it's a different situation. If you are with AF and stay in WPAFB then you're serving your time in the military and you're serving your contract time with OU. My physician (DO graduated from OU) was Army HPSP and served oversea. When she was done with her military obligation, she got out and open her own practice in OH to pay back her time from the contract. If you don't practice in OH (pending you're OOS), then you will have to pay a fee to break the contract. Again, this might change by the time you've graduated. Hope that helps.
