Hey everyone,

I'm a relatively new member to the site and thought I would post something that might be of use to others. I spent 6 weeks in OUCOM's summer scholars program this summer. The program ran from the middle of June until the end of July. While here they pay for you to stay in a dorm and attend several classes in Anatomy, Biochem, Microanatomy, Pharm, Case Base Learning, and a short research class. They run you through stuff pretty fast but you get exposed to quite a bit in those 6 weeks. We had 4 solid weeks dissecting a cadaver where it was 5 to a body. You also participate in several group projects and presentations and attend seminars on various topics related to medicine an/or medical school.

OUCOM's campus is in Athens which is 70 miles SE of Columbus. The campus is surrounded by beautiful forests and hills. I've you are one for fun drive through the country then this place is surrounded by them. There is definitely a small town type of feel to the place but the atttudes seem very progressive. While most of Ohio is conservative this place seems to be filled progressive thinkers and liberal minds.

The dean of the medical school is extremely approachable and down to earth. The medical school is heavily involved with rural medicine and medicine in general through the region. All of the med students I met in the summer were very happy to be there and had positive comments about the program. There seems to be plenty of resources to ensure the success of their students.

While it is not my first choice, I would definitely enjoy my time at OUCOM if no one else picks me up.

Thanks

Hey dude,
I attended SURF last summer and I am a current OMS I. I agree with everything that you just said. I ONLY interviewd here because I was extremely impressed with the school and the atmosphere. It is very collaborative and I feel like a member of a family rather than a med school class. Even though I am still getting to know everyone in my class, I can still join in a conversation and not get that "why are talkin to us" look. I wouldn't go anywhere else... and the Osteopathic Clinical Anatomy Orientation this August has been amazing so far; very rigorous, but I am learning so much. Everyone here wants you to learn and do well... even your own classmates.
