Hi everyone,

I'll be applying this coming cycle and I was wondering what the admission's impact would be once this branched opened up at OUHCOM. Or if there would be possible problems in rotations the third year because the school would be new? Also if applying to both branches would be in one application versus two (like LECOM)? I tried to look through the site for more information but can't seem to find anything related to the curriculum of the school or the application process. I'm just afraid they might not have the resources that they would in Athens, Ohio. Any insight?

It's the best DO school in the country. Probably just making satellite campuses.

I read that the new branch will be mainly for those wanting to pursue family practice or primary care maybe. I used to live in Columbus and I worked at Riverside Methodist Hospital, there were always DO students from OUHCOM rotating there and it is a great hospital! There is a sister hospital called Doctor's Hospital that is mainly a DO hospital and they have a partnership with OUHCOM. Alot of students also rotate there. Columbus is a great city with a lot of hospitals from Ohio State's, to Mount Carmel to OhioHealth sites. Even if OUHCOM weren't as awesome as it is, I don't think it'd be hard for them to find rotation sites.

Hello,

Apologies that it has taken me so long to find this post and provide answers.

Students applying for entry to OU-HCOM in 2014 will have one designation to select on the AACOMAS application. On the secondary application there will be a place for you to select a campus preference (Athens, Dublin or either campus). Because OhioHealth is our preiminent educational partner in this expansion, our students will not experience any problems with securing 3rd and 4th year rotations. All rotations are set to occur in the central Ohio area.

The curriculum offered at the Dublin site will be exclusively our Clinical Presentation Continuum curriculum (http://www.oucom.ohiou.edu/cpc/) and you will have space designed for even more group learning than we have here in Athens (plus all new "stuff" in general). Full-time faculty, student affairs staff and learning specialists will all be present on the new campus. It really will be like HCOM Athens but with a new car smell 🙂.

Hope that helps at least a little. Please feel free to email me directly at [email protected] (or continue to post here) if you have more questions.

Yes, you are correct in that the focus of this new campus, as well as the focus of HCOM Athens (and soon to be HCOM Cleveland), will be primary care specialties. With the looming shortage of primary care physicians in Ohio, we have rededicated ourselves to training more family medicine, internal medicine and pediatrician physicians than ever before for future service to our state. However, having said that, we still welcome those who wish to go into other specialties and sub-specialties, it is just that we are keenly interested in those who have a "heart for service" that feeds our primary care mission.
