My story in a nutshell: I was supposed to graduate in 2009. I fulfilled all the requirements except for passing step 2. Family issues arose and then i fell into a deep depression that lasted for several months. The school asked me to make up a rotation in the Fall of 09, which I did and then to set my sight on working on the boards. I failed a second time in the spring this year, went to a prep course in the summer and finally passed this Fall. The school again asked me to do an in hospital rotation, which I did and now they have graduated me in November 2010. The depression is resolved and well under control, "better living through chemistry!"

I am really at a loss as to how to address this in the personal statement and i would really like to start a program mid-cycle: January or February at the latest. Any suggestions, comments or ridicule are welcome!

"I took a leave due to personal medical issues which have now been resolved. I initially failed Step 2 during that time but have now passed. I graduated. The End."

No excuses (and I'm dead serious about this if you use the word "but" in your PS, minds will shut off and it's over for you), no drama, no unrequested exposition and be positive about what how your personal experience with illness will make you a better physician.

The entire explanation of this situation in your PS should be about as long as this post. Be prepared to address it more thoroughly in interviews, but don't give them ammunition in your application that they don't need.

Thanks gutonc. I am definitely prepared to address it in interviews and I appreciate your admonition that brevity is key.
