Not that I have been admitted to any school yet, but I was wondering, for those who did receive admission and an 1-20, did you have to go back to your country to apply for F1 visa?

yes u have to....the only exception would be if you are already on F1 (like doing your Masters, etc) which will be valid for the period of your DDS/DMD duration.
