Hi, I was wondering what anyone knows about out of staters and interviewing at Miami.

Has anyone outside Florida received an interview, or are there any stats about this sort of thing?

Thanx

They have pretty strict cut-offs for out-of-staters to receive a secondary (I think it's 3.6 GPA, 30 MCAT). I am in CA and received an interview but withdrew last week.

Thanks for the info...I've already turned in the secondary, and I've been checking the status website and found out today that I'm on some ranked list. I went on their website, and they make it seem like everyone is at first put on this list before interviews are sent out. If u dont mind me asking, do u know when you were complete, put on the list, and given an interview? (Why'd u withdraw btw?)

Just wondering, when were you complete? Mine still says "Under Review" (I did take August MCAT though).

UMiami is strict in their review of secondaries from out-of-state but relatively "lax" with those they interview. (I got lucky and received interview)

Last year, according to US News, 100 out of 1400 out of state applicants were interviewed. 83 out of those 100 were accepted. This is incredible to me.

Don't know anything about status details.

Wish everyone luck, it's one of my top choices.

I was given the interview on September 23. I was complete in early August, I think. I turned down the interview because of being accepted elsewhere (too expensive to fly to every interview).

I got placed on Ranked List today. Is it as good as rejection??

Do you guys think it is ok to call the school and ask further info?

no everyone is on that list initially and it is updated after interview I guess because I was in the same list even after interview but when I checked now it said that I am up for balloting..means final round as per Dr. Hinkley ....

But I guess calling won't harm....they r pretty friendly

good luck

I was on the ranked list even after I had scheduled my interview.

Thanks for info. I will give them a call next week.

How long does Miami take for deciding to give interviews to out of staters? I'm going to submit my 2ndary tomorrow (I know i've been really bad on not doing it earlier, but I just added them after receiving my Aug. MCAT scores). I'm thinking ill be complete there by mid november, and wondering if i should expect to hear from them anytime before january.

thanks and congrats to all those who have inteviewed there.

It took them a month for File Comlete(Oct 1) => Ranked List(Today).

I hope I get an interview. Living in Miami would be awesome.

Have you tried status link? If not, I will post it when I get back to my place(at computer lab right now).

Congrats to those who already have interview invites, and Good luck to those that are waiting, be patient it will come. Umiami rocks, I really love the school and I have a great group of classmates. It's still a lot of work, but we do a lot of hands on clinical practice that reminds you why you are in med school. If you have any questions just PM, and I will do my best to help.

GO CANES!

Hi OP,
I was put on the ranked list yesterday or today and heard a few hours ago that i'd be getting an interview. I'm a massachusetts resident and you can look at my stats via my mdapplicant link. Hope this info is helpful!

Good Luck!

CarleneM, did you take any courses at Harvard Postbac program?

After much hesitation I bought the ticket to Miami for $310 (more expensive than flying to San Diego!). It seems people at UMiami are rather content there for several reasons despite the high cost of education. What make you all wanting to go to UMiami?

Curios Tom, indeed I did. I didn't go through their official postbac program because I already had most of my pre-reqs done as an undergrad but I did take orgo and physics. Now i'm taking biochem. Why do you ask? PM me since for some reason I can't tell when someone responds to a thread I wrote in even though I subscribe to it and check that I want instant email notifcation. It used to work then one day it randomly stopped working.

I want to go to UMiami because a good friend of mine is at grad school there (clinical psych) and loves it. I also wanted an excuse to visit her if I got an interview.....

Does anyone know how the ranked list works--are you just assigned a ranking and then they work their way through that for interviews until the class is filled, or do they periodically review the ranked list to decide where people fall in light of new applications/information and interview based on that (i.e., is the ranking fixed or not)? I have been on the ranked list for several weeks, and I'm wondering if my improved Aug MCAT score will be taken into consideration now that it is available in determining whether or not I get an interview.
