Hello Guys:
It might be a stupid question, but asking never hurts!!!!
I am applying for the 2010 cycle, and based on my stats, I have a good chance of getting some interviews. My state has only one school, so the remaining 9 schools I am applying are out of state with each of them at least having 35,000.00$ tuition( based on predents.com). My question is that if I got accepted into one of these schools, how long is it gonna take for me to be eligible for in state tuition? do I have to pay OOS tution for all 4 years??? I hope not!!! I heard that you apply early, can pay in state tution starting from the first year in some schools like New Jersey dental school, and for some you can be eligible from the second year? But I'm not sure. Is there any law regarding this and is same for all schools or it just depends on the school itself? By the way, my OOS school choices are:
U Penn, NYU, Columbia, Temple, NJSDM, VCU, Howard, Maryland.
I will appreciate any comments and information that you might have about these schools.
Thanks and good luck

It has nothing to do with whether you've applied early or not. You must become a resident of that state in order to pay the in-state tuition. To become a resident you must live in that state for a certain amount of time (1 whole year I believe). At the end of this time period, you must provide the school with documents proving that you have indeed lived in that state for one whole year (Bank statements, DMV documents, etc.). Only then, will the school consider you a resident of that state and change your tuition to in-state. What does all this mean? You must pay the out of state tuition for the first year, until you become a resident.

At Temple (and I believe Pitt as well) you CANNOT get in-state tuition for any of the 4 years unless you are a Pennsylvania resident when you enter d-school. This is the main reason I didn't end up going to Temple. Yes, even when you are a 4th year and have lived in Pennsy for the last 3 years of your life... you must still pay OOS tuition.

At Buffalo and Stony Brook you can get in-state tuition your first year if you buy a house in NY before the due date of the NY domicile application (it was July 1st this year). Otherwise, you can become eligible to pay in-state tuition for the remaining 3 years after living in NY for a year. UMDNJ-NJDS works the same way, I believe (but I can't be sure because I didn't pay as much attention to this because I am a NJ resident).

So, basically, the rules are school/state dependent. Contact the schools you are interested in to find out their policy.

Any additional information on other schools not mentioned in the thread? This is truly wonderful information for future applicants. Thanks.

if you do a search there was a thread last year that actally broke down ~75% of the schools and whether you would ever be allowed to switch to in state status. try seeing if you can find that bc i'm sure it has exactly what you're looking for.
