Okay-

Let me start by saying thanks to everyone who has provided all this great information.
I am currently 4yrs s/p Med School graduation and still haven't done my residency thanks to the US military. I am currently talking to a couple of Anesthesiology programs outside the match, but am going to submit an ERAS application this year in case that doesn't work out.

Looking at everyone's posts in regards to board scores and grades I would say I don't have a chance of getting accepted. Everyone here is obviously very intelligent and motivated. While I'm no duumy, my motivation didn't really kick in till after Step 2. Prior to that I was headed towards a nice Family Practice, now I am reaping what I sowed.

In an effort to save time and money I am hoping someone can point me towards some of the better low/mid level programs that I have a better chance of success with. To give you a reference point STEP 1 and STEP 2 were <200. Step 3 was a 219, go figure. I was in the middle 1/3 of my med school class. I've secured a LOR from an Anesthesiologist that seems impressed with me. And for what its worth, I ran a Medical Department on a Navy ship for 2 years. I would rather not repeat an internship. Location is of secondary importance, but my wife would like to be close to home...Texas.

Any and all comments are appreciated.

Your military background and management experience will definitely be a plus. If you can have that anesthesiologist call a program you are interested in, that might also be very helpful. With your Step 1 & 2, it will be a very challenging, but not totally hopeless situation. You have to be flexible and be willing to accept that you may not be able to go to your ideal situation.

Apply early and broadly. Explain your situation thoroughly in your LOR. Be prepared to have some programs reject you outright based on just your Steps, and move on. Maintain contact with any program that doesn't reject your application and call to find out the status of your application fairly frequently. If you have time, visiting a program on your own time and arranging any type of rotation, even a week or two week rotation, will definitely help you get your foot in the door.

I can't speak for the other Texas programs, but I know that we have already filled our spots outside the match for 2006. You can only apply for a position in 2006 through the match at this time.

Contact all of the programs you are or might be interested in and find out the status of their position availability and pace yourself accordingly.

That should at least get you started.

Good luck.
