This position acts as a part of the pharmacy team to complete pharmacy services under the direct supervision of a registered pharmacist including prescriptions processing/filling; delivery of medications to inpatients; prescription compounding; ensuring that patients receive safe, appropriate and effective medical treatment by providing clinical drug information to physicians, nurses and patients; monitoring patient drug therapy, checking for drug-drug interactions; ensuring the provision of the most cost-effective therapy and recommending alternative drug treatments to providers when appropriate.
1. Enter prescription information into the computer system.
2. Bill the prescription to the insurance carrier as appropriate.
3. Fill the prescription with the correct drug, quantity, and provide directions as specified by the prescriber.
4. Perform extemporaneous drug compounding; making solutions, suspensions, creams, ointments, ophthalmic preparations, and injectable preparations.
5. Discuss prescription problems with the prescribing nurse or doctor.
6. Provide drug information to other healthcare providers as requested.
7. Provide drug information to patients regarding how the drug works, side effects, and how they should monitor its effectiveness or ineffectiveness, as well as warn them of potential adverse reactions and potential interactions with other drugs or food.
This position requires a working knowledge of drug formularies and insurance restrictions; strong organizational skills; excellent interpersonal skills; a working knowledge of clinical drug information; the ability to operate a computer system; the ability to compound sterile and non-sterile drugs; and the ability to work under stress and time pressures.
This position requires an Intern License from the Washington State Board of Pharmacy and to be enrolled in a accredited college of pharmacy making steady progress toward graduation and full pharmacist licensure.
