Hi
Please help me decide between OUWB and FIU. I’m interested in competitive specialities later on , (surgery / plastics ) and I know doing research and getting published is super important for that . But I’m not sure about the research opportunities at these 2 schools. Can you please help me decide ?
Thanks

FIU, but I'm from Florida so it would be hard for me to suggest OUWB although I am also familiar with Michigan. I'm fairly certain OUWB is more established though and would have better research opportunities. Do you live in either area and have you made pros/cons?

I don’t live in either Michigan or Florida.

I would say OUWB because their surgery programs are solid, and FIU's OOS tuition is $10k more than OUWB's.

Tuition is high but the cost of living in Florida with a roommate could equal that (Michigan royal oak more expensive). living in Florida might just make med school better (Flashcards in the sunlight/beach vs cold Midwest winters). Residency matches are also super regional, esp the med school region. Do you have target residency programs? Less research is required than you think for residency as hey know med students slate busy. Imo step scores, clinical grades, away rotations, luck matter more than perceived research cv. OUWB sets you up to match residency in or near Michigan. I think you could be just as successful at FIU and can budget to make those costs similar. I would pick FIU l- I dislike cold! OUWB is still a bit newer so likely no advantage there with decades long alumni network. Good luck med school is what you put in!!
