I’m fortunate to get accepted into OUWB and VTCSOM. Please help me decide. Hoping to be a surgeon . Would greatly appreciate input focused on classes, research, match chances into surgery, reputation of the teaching hospital etc I/o COA.
Thank you !

VTCSOM is Pass/Fail for pre-clinical years, OUWB is Honors, Pass, Pass with Remediation, Fail. That right there is enough to sway me toward VTCSOM.

VTCSOM 2020 Match Data (45 graduating students)
1 - ENT - Cleveland Clinic
8 - Gen Surg - VTech x2, Rutgers NJMS, East Tennessee State, Madigan Army, Kaiser, GWU, UVA
3 - Plastics - Nassau, NYP/Weill Cornell, Emory
1 - Urology - Alabama
1 - NSG - MUSC
14/45 matching into surgery/surgical subspecialties

OUWB 2020 Match Data (106 graduating students)
9 - Gen Surg - U Arizona Phoenix, Beaumont Royal Oak x2, Miami, Stony Brook, SUNY Brooklyn, UIC, UCSF-Fresno, UCSF-East Bay
2- Urology - SUNY Buffalo, Mayo Clinic,
4- Ophtho - UT Houston, SUNY Buffalo, VCU, Henry Ford
3 - Ortho - Beaumont Royal Oak, Toledo, Pitt
18/106 matching into surgery/surgical subspecialties

Again, the match data would make me lean toward VTCSOM even more.

Thank you DataKing. Where did you get the details of the VTCSOM 2020 match? I can’t seem to find it 🙁. Also it appears that for “competitive specialities “ VTCSOM students match at VTC itself or the other “southern” programs?
Is my observation correct ?

VTC is actually P/F all four years. Research is mandatory and is built into the program over all four years. The preclinical phase runs the typical two years but that includes dedicated time for research in the second half of year 2. The teaching method is a mix of lecture and PBL. PBL is big at this school. The school is affiliated with the large Carilion Clinic which includes a major hospital center that serves a large area.

Thanks. But for surgical research do students have to travel to Virginia tech in Blacksburg ? How do students manage lectures with the research time commitment?

Wondering where you grabbed this data for VTC and OUWB. I don't see year-by-year match data on the VTC website. I'm interested in the non-surgery match numbers. I don't see this on USNWR either. Please share!

So VTC >OuWB ?

Please help me decide between OUWB and VTCSOM.
I am OOS for both schools so $$ savings is out of question. I am a traditional student ( no gap year - job/ clinical research/ other experiences).
I am interested in surgical specialties and have a regular memory ( NOT a photographic memory lol )

OUWB
Pros
1. Michigan
2. Great matches for orthopedic surgery .
3. Organ based curriculum. ( not sure if this helps in step prep as compared to PBL curriculum)

Cons
1. Newer school (1 year younger than VTCSOM)
2. Honors/ Pass/Fail curriculum with internal ranking
3. Matches lack variety in Plastics/ dermatology/ neuro surgery
4. Understand students have to search their own research mentor OUTSIDE the mandatory Embark program.
5. Not sure if they have dedicated step prep time.
6. Unranked ( don’t know why though)
7. Not sure of OUWB’s Prestige / ranking for residency matches

VTCSOM
Pros
1. True P/F all 4 years
2. Research heavy ( good for specialities)
3. Small class size so less competition for research positions + higher visibility with faculty ( can also be a con as a student cannot hide)
5. PBL curriculum ( don’t know if this is a con) . PBL also makes attendance mandatory. But not sure if PBL helps in step prep.
6. Dedicated step prep time

Cons
1. Roanoke
2. Newer school ( 1 year older than OUWB)
3. Not sure of the quality of research at Carilion or Research institute for surgical specialties given the huge focus on wellness and long term conditions.
4. Not sure of the matches into surgical specialities.
5. Not sure of VTCSOM’s prestige / ranking in residency matches.

Please help me decide.
Thanks

VTCSOM's website has a 2020 commencement program listing the residencies their students matched into. The prior years you may be able to get some info from watching their match day videos

Do you want to match back to any region in particular ? Do you have family in or around either school that might be important ? What's the con with Roanoke ?

Probably lean OUWB given your desire for surgery (maybe Ortho). As far as the areas go, I think I'd rather live in Virginia. Sounds like you prefer Michigan.
