I'm on a rotation now, and its the first time I've ever butt heads with residents. The residents I have gotten into a disagreement with are newly appointed, straight out of med school R1s in family medicine. Basically, these residents try to scut the crap out of myself and the other MS3s and 4s, and do it in a very condesending and disrespectful matter. I couldn't take it anymore so I disagreed with them. They can pipe all they want but I've recieved good words from all of the attendings about my performance, so I'm not concerned about what they think.

They seem to be suffering from some sort of cockiness. It appears that now that they have their recently-framed MD they believe they can just go giving attitude to the MS3s and 4s like they're so much more experienced. These illusions of grandeur are very bothersome.

Have any of you experienced nightmare new R1s? What service were they from, and how did you deal with them?

I had a really bad R1 in IM. She wouldn't let me do an H&P on a patient at all, rather she would have me write down the stuff while she asked the Q's. Then she refused to let me examine patients 🙁. But on the plus side she did give me the honour of finding her PDA, stethoscope etc whenever she misplaced them.

A friend of mine was being put through the same sort of scut work when the R2 told him that he was here to learn not be someone's b****. Then in front of the R1s he told my friend that it was not his job to do scut work. They got the message and backed off him. Guess it helps to have an understanding R1
🙂
