I would like to thank you for all the advice I read on this site.
I wouldn't have pass any shelf exam or step 1 or 2 with you guys giving great advice.

I always thought I had some type of learning disability because of my undiagnosed anxiety attacks during exam taking or because the fact that I needed to write things down to learn/memorize things. School was not my skill. Some people have phobia in heights or spider; my phobia has always been taking exams since I would get hyperventilate and just forget everything. I wanted to go seek some help for this but felt kinda embarrassed.

Here is my story.....
-Barely pass 2nd year med school; barely pass all my 1st and 2nd year classes. I remember I had to take a couple of exams over since i failed the final exam.
-passed step 1 after second attempt with 82%.
-barely Pass Shelf exams- the highest % I got on shelf exam was a 70%. I had to take 2 shelf exams over since I failed by a couple of points.
-passed step 2 CS with an avg score after second attempt
-Pass step 2 CK after 3 attempts; I always missed a passing score by a couple of points. My third attempt I got a 80%.

My moral of the story........ DON'T EVER GIVE UP on your dreams!!!!
People may say what they want but if you really want something, then go for it.
I knew I never was the smartest cat but I knew I worked hard. And hard work will pay off.
So for people who are down after failing a basic science exam, shelf exam, or step exam, please don;t give up. Be persistence and better ways to prepare for your hurdle. I did and it paid off.

When I told my mother that I was graduating from med school this month, she broke down in tears and then I started to cry too. My mother knew that though my path was going to be hard, she believed in me. I BELIEVE IN YOU!!!!

Congratulations. Did you end up landing a residency? Just wondering, I'm kinda scared about Step 2 at times myself.

thats my question.

congrats on finally passing, but did you get a residency? my step 2 ck is in a few weeks. yikes!

I just read this thread and you gave me hope. I barely passed my first two years of medical school. Just found out I failed the Step 1. I feel like I have a learning disability. I can't believe I am one of the few in the nation to fail this test and I'd like to think I'm not that dumb. Ive studied so much in school and worked my ass off, but I am always barely passing or failing/retaking an exam to pass a class in medschool. I too get major anxiety attacks. I am now thinking about going to a doctor to see if something like anti-anxiety meds and maybe Adderall will help me study so I can retake and pass the Step 1 this October. I've always been a really good student up until medschool. For some reason, it takes forever for anything to stick in my brain. I hate it. Hopefully, I can pass and would be delighted if I could actually do well on this Step 1 retake. I just want to a doctor someday. It's proving difficult for me but I'm trying. But I can't help myself with thoughts of how I would have maybe been better in Dental school or pursuing my dreams of professions in architecture or interior designing. 🙁 Anyways, I am really proud of you. Congrats! I can't wait until the day I hold my MD diploma in my hand. It will be the best day of my life.

Thank you very much for sharing your experience. It's very inspirational and I would love to read this realistic story rather than 250+ fictional stories. Congrats on your graduation and wish you the best!!!🙂

Meaty,

I have a similiar story to yours, and was diagnosed with a learning disability in 2nd grade. You should know it is very common for people to be diagnosed at the beginning of med school.

I too had difficulty with Step 1, I passed after the second attempt. I passed Step 2 CS the first time without a problem, but have failed step 2 CK twice and am trying my hardest to not get discouraged and hopefully pass it this time around (my goal is somewhere between 189-210), but I'm struggling.

I graduated a couple years ago, didn't match, but got into a Prelim spot for one year and worked on a post doc and an MPH.

Long story short, I'm still trying and just want you to know ... you're not alone.

Congratulations!!!
