Can a person with a college degree be rejected for an hourly position at a pharmacy due to being overqualified?

Isn't that employment discrimination.

Hmm. It is harder for me to get a part time minimum wage pharmacy job than a real full time entry level one in the science field....

I don't think it is difficult to get a clerk job, because I just walked up to the counter and asked to speak with the pharmacy manager. I told them that I was on the path to applying for Pharm school, and that was that. He offered me a clerk position but it was only paying like $7.75. At the time, I had just graduated college so I wanted a better paying job, since my girlfriend is kinda high maintenance. So I don't think that you would be rejected for being overqualified. But it's more of you taking a big pay cut if you were to do so. I also had a job offer at an environmental science lab that would pay me 3 times the amount of the pharmacy clerk job. After thinking it through I ended up volunteering at a hospital pharmacy, and working full time for the science company. But I dunno, depends on your situation. You will most likely gain more experience in pharm. if you work as a clerk though.

What kind of employment discrimination? Sex? Age? Disability?

which pharmacy in Brea?

I was fired from a pharmacy clerk job, and the reason was (and i quote):
"I shouldn't have hired someone who knows as much as you."

So, i got the job, but basically got fired because I was "overqualified."

It was at a Save-on on Rosemeand in Pasadena. It's near my parents house. But if you live in or near Brea/Fullerton, there are plenty of pharmacies in the area you can try.

Yes to first question.

No to second, at least as far as discrimination that's illegal by law.

"Overqualified" is their way of saying that you have probably experienced too much intellectually to enjoy the job so they are assuming that if you were to get the jobs then you would quickly become disgruntled and quit. This type of theory is based on a lot of assumptions but is even more reasons why the job you applied to just may not be a good fit anyway. Ideally they should welcome someone w/ a college level education and should figure out ways to stimulate you intellectually given your interest as a pharmacy student and even a potential pharmacist employee in the event that you could potentially work for the company upon graduation. However, none of this appears to be the case so I'd just move on and try another store and possibly consider checking out tech work in a hospital and/or long term care/home infusion.

Nope I don't think it is discrimination in a legal sense, but probably just poor judgement of the employer.
