I was wondering if anyone had volunteered overseas during their premed. I have been thinking of volunteering in another country for some time now and the more i think about it, the more i want to do it. I think it would be an amazing life experience for anyone to do. If anyone has any stories and good organizations that they have volunteered with i would love to know.

Thanks

This organization provides the best opportunities, in my opinion. But I haven't actually participated yet.

Our school sets up a trip with International Service Learning to Costa Rica and Nicaragua over spring break (we have a two week long break). It was an amazing experience. Their website is http://islonline.org

PM me if you have any specific questions about it.

hi physiclas87,
Do you know anyone who has worked with them?

Hi,
Definitely do it!!!! I did a lot of volunteering abroad as an undergrad and am now spending a year in guatemala training midwives. These experiences will change your whole view of medicine. And they give a ton to write about on the application and make you unique. One website that has been helpful to some people is www.idealist.org. Please let me know if you need any other help.

Volunteered in German hospital for a month. Doesn't quite compare to all the third-world country work mentioned above, but was still a great experience. It gave me lots of insight into a different medical system and a chance to brush up on language skills. AND I got to spend several months in Europe. If you have the opportunity, definitely go for it.

Hi guys,
With what organizations did you guys volunteer with and how much did your whole trip cost?

Europe sounds really good but i would love to go to Latin America since i speak spanish.

I went to Ecuador with Child Family Health International. I had a great time, however we did do more shadowing than actual "work". http://www.cfhi.org/
Let me know if you have any questions about it.

I too am interested in the costs. From what I've been noticing, many of these trips range from $1000-$3000.

I know someone who did two vfp workcamps in Germany, and he loved it.

Hi guys,
I would also love to hear people's experiences volunteering overseas. I have been thinking of doing it for a long time too, so any information would help.
I think it would help us (the people thinking of volunteering overseas) a lot if anyone can shine some light on these questions:

1) What organization did you volunteer with?
2) How much did your trip cost?
3) Your experiences with the program and what you did while volunteering.

Thank you!

I got back from peru two days ago. It was my second trip. As someone who has limited clinical experience, the trip is great. Or if you have tons of expereince, you will see things you have never seen before. You get so much hands on experience. Anything that comes up and you are interested in being a part of, they'll teach you. Truly hands on. It is totally for the adventerous type. Traveling down the Amazon river, visiting different villages. In the summer, there is a med student program for med students, those going into medical school/ thinnking about med school, nursing, etc. They really teach so much. The people are amazing. I simply can't say enough. I am already planning on going back before starting med school. if you have any questions PM me!

After looking at the web site... that trip looks amazing.

I agree, the trip looks really good. But does the cost (US $1900) include the air fair for getting there? Becuase its a little expensive.

1. I went on my own to la Esperanza, Honduras- I had a few names and numbers, it's the town where they train peace corps in Honduras. I really just went.
2. round trip tix 500$, rent/meals x 4 months = 80*4 = 320$, misc crap ~200$.
3. I basically found a woman who was doing work for the city mayor, and got hooked up teaching computer applications and english to kids at a vocational school. I worked with the red cross a bit there as well. It was all pro bono. The whole trip was cheaper than living here 4 months. I went to learn Spanish, which I did. My family I stayed with was not so cool (aparently a rarity) and Honduras is not for the faint of heart. Lots of dead dogs on the roads being picked at by gimongous vultures, drunk bums, and miscelaneous sad ****. I had a time that will forever change me, but I could have made it cooler if I did some things differently.

Just Go. I wasn't going to pay to get the experience.

Hi Lexy10,
I just visited the amazonpromise.com website and trip looks great. I was also thinking of volunteering overseas. Could you tell me what you did while volunteering with Amazonpromise?. It would be great if you could tell us what you did, the highlights of the trip and the costs.

THANKS...

I went to Africa with my church... It was kind of disorganized, but still a really good experience...

I visited two seperate times. The first time I was on the Yarapa river...a tributary of the amazon. You stay in a lodge and everyday travel to a different village and set-up clinic frin their school houses. There are stations, usually 2 or 3 stations with a doctor/PA/NP and a health student, there is a wound care station, does lice washes, cleans wounds, scabies washes, debread older wounds, give shots (IM mostly), and finally there is a pharmacy bench. I mainly chose to work with the doctors...learned to diagnose, get histories etc., by the time i went down the second time i ws pretty comfortable seeing patients without a doctor, but also very aware of my limitations, so would constantly check with a doctor if I had any questions. If your interest is in another station, they are so flexible! Truly, they are so for you learning. The second time i went down I went to the corrientes (similar to the pastaza river trips). the people are much more indiginous. Few speak spanish, most speak a native language. More camping, be prepared to live in a tent and only bathe when it rains.
As for the price, It varies based on the program chosen and how many times you go down (after the first time it is less expensive). The website lists the price. I know it went down since my first time, so i can't tell you off hand. BUT this is how the group (not religiously affiliated) gets money for the medicines, cooks, and guides. the entire cost is tax deductible, and they will help you to raise the money. One girl I was with raised the money in less than two weeks. They pay for all of your food and lodging including hotel in Iquitos before you go out to the river. They do not pay airfare...which you have to go to lima then iquitos...total round trip is usually about 600, can be less or more depending on season...if you are really interested PM me and I will give more details on that...
the food is excellent...really I eat better in the jungle than i do at home! They will accomidate any diatary restrictions. I'm a veggie, and i ate sooo well. A girl with crohn's disease was with me on my first trip and told me she never felt so good. they totally catered to her needs.
More over, the group becomes a family. I have met some of my best friends in the jungle. This last time I had my birthday in the jungle. They made a chocolate cake and had a little party. It was such a surprise, and chocolate never tasted so good.
if you want more...trust me i can talk more... 😍

I have never heard of that organization (amazonpromise.com) but that trip looks awesome. Has anyone else volunteered with them?

They just changed the name...it was Rainforest Health Project for about 10 years...
