Hey Smart Peeps,

I have a couple of questions about the following (p. 598 in FA 2014):

O2 content = (O2 capacity x SaO2) + Pa/vO2

First of all, since Pa/PvO2 (dissolved, I assume) is so small, do you just assume it is zero in this formula for the purposes of board exams?

More importantly, can anyone comment on what these parameters would show in a vein vs. artery:

1. In a peripheral vein, Oxygen content < Oxygen capacity. I am assuming this is because Hb are not fully saturated, so SaO2 is less than 100%. Is that correct?

2. What would you see in a peripheral artery? Is oxygen content = oxygen capacity? i.e. is SaO2 = 100%?

Thanks x 100.
