Oxygen in early Earth's atmosphere

iEarth's atmosphere didn't have O2 so how come it had H2O, CO and CO2?

If there's no molecular oxygen then how do you get compounds with it?

earth's early atmosphere was a reducing environment hence no oxygen gas.

THere were oxygen molecules but not Oxygen gas (O bonded to O).

another bio question:
wiki says glyoxylate cycle occurrs in plants, certain vertebrates, and several microorganisms, such as E. coli and yeast.

Is this the cycle that E.coli undergo when in our large intestines? just trying to figure out when bacteria do use this cycle.
