I've been dealing with a health struggle that has put me in the hospital a couple times so far this summer (which is significant I would say considering how it hasn't been that long) during my calculus class. It's made it really difficult to catch up/stay current on the material, and it's definitely affecting my grades in the course. After the first hospital visit I asked my professor what my prospective grade might be and he said a B, which, while not ideal, is fine. But after this second visit I feel so behind that I question if that's even possible. Seems more like a C, or possibly lower. I don't know. I'm just really worried that, regardless of what my grade is right now, it's not good, and the potential of needing another hospital visit or something will only make it worse.

Would switching the grading to P/F with a note on my application explaining the medical situation be okay? Or should I try to see if my school will let me drop the course and retake when my health is more stable? At this point it seems like there's hardly enough time in a day to go to class, get help from tutors to catch up, and sustain a job (which I need to pay the bills, of course)... in addition to the health-related distractions.

I'm just so frustrated. The material isn't necessarily that hard, it's more that I've gotten behind from going to the hospital (or not going to the hospital but feeling the affects of my illness) and it's been hard to catch up. I'm also worried how calc II, III, linear algebra, and differential equations will be for me in the future if I don't learn calc I well enough as a result of these circumstances.

Check to see if your school has a hardship withdrawal designation. I don't know how it would apply to one course, but I lost a very close family member while in college and had to stop classes for that quarter. I was able to get a hardship withdrawal and it basically just said HW on my transcript.

You can get a medical withdrawal (MW). Alternatively, see if a doctor will write you a note for extra time for completing assignments. I had that allowed once in high school.
